What’s the best burger you ever had?

Wall Street Journal food reporter Raymond Sokolov has named the “Ghetto Burger” at Ann’s Snack Shop the best hamburger in America. What’s the best burger you ever had?

Best burger I have tasted is in a place called Mugshot’s in Hattiesburg, MS. The burger is perfectly grilled, marinated sirloin ground beef with garden fresh toppings on a home-made fresh bun! If you can get over the wild-wild-west bar surroundings, it is a great meal with great atmosphere.

the basic cheddar burger at houstons. it’s a no frills classic! not a fan of the shoe string fries, but sub for the iron skillet beans and you’re good to go.

With all due respect to the winner on Memorial Drive, I have traveled the world over and In-N-Out is by far the best hamburger around. I can guarantee the WS Journal reporter didn’t select them because the decision would have been seen as too obvious. The media today is more about adding drama, twists, and turns than reporting good ole’ accuracy.

* Nothing beats making them yourself, on your own grill, cold beer in hand, buddies and family all around. Hopefully outside Sanford Stadium or Atlanta Raceway*

But a close second goes to The Depot in Columbia, SC (R.I.P) where they put fried eggs on top, and the yolk ran down your chin. My most memorable was a burger I had at Mcdonald’s in Moscow in 1991. After 3 weeks of cabbage, beans, rock hard loaf bread, and mystery meats, I teared up when I had that “Beeg Mak”! Home sweet home!

I’m with joey — the Vortex is the place to beat for burgers. I’ve tried burgers all over the country, and the Vortex is just better. Is there any indication this Wall Street critic even tried one there?

I don’t think so! Sokolov has obviously never been to In-N-Out burger—nobody does them better, not to mention their homemade fries and to-die-for shakes. Hands Down is right—from Mykonos to Macon, London to LA, “nobody” makes a better burger…

Corner Cafe in Gilmer County on the corner of Highway 382 and Old 5. Have it all the way. It’s big, it’s messy, it’s served on a deli wrap in a plastic basket with fries and it’s terrific. There’s nothing fancy or expensive about this place. The women behind the counter don’t wear chef hats but they know how to make a sandwich! I once worked on a house near there and I’d dream all morning about having a cheeseburger at lunch then smile all afternoon with satisfaction.

I can’t comment on how good their burger is, but I am NEVER going to a place whose owner insists on being called “Ms Ann” and where you have to wait till her royal highness addresses you first. Are you kidding me?????? I am the one paying you!!!!

It’s Miss Ann, not Ms. Ann, justme. And yes, I would strongly urge you not to even think about going there…she’d boot you out the front door. And yes, it’s the best burger going…just make sure you’ve got your cardiologist’s cell phone number with you. And your affairs in order.

If you have never been to Johnson City, Tennessee, then you have not enjoyed the best burger ever from a dive called “The Horseshoe Lounge” The ‘Shoe, as we call it, is the hangout where all of the guys from the local VA center hold court, a dark, smoke-filled place with the NASCAR interior and the GREATEST burger of all times! So, get in your car and make the 4 hour trip north for a great burger….

Yup, Kim. I have to totally agree, George’s in VA Highlands has amazing burgers. Best in Atlanta by far. But outside the city… Miss Meg’s in Clayton georgia serves a burger that would make you roll your own grill off the deck. It’s the size of a baby’s head and tastes like red meat heaven.

I think the In-and-Out burger is good but not great. It’s a fast food burger that is done right and that’s about the best you can say for it.

I do think that the frilled up burgers should be in another category, they really aren’t hamburgers. They can taste great but just aren’t the same thing as a hamburger.

The best burger I ever had? It was at a Dairy Queen when I was 12 years old. That’s the perfect place. And being 12 was the perfect age to appreciate a hamburger. It was done on a big grill, was hamburger not ground sirloin (fatty hamburger gets that great dark crust quickly).

I am wondering if George’s on West Peachtree is the same as the one on Highland. Great burger there.

I agree that Five Guys is outstanding. Under the “Do One Thing and Do it Right” Theory.

But the best burger is in Smyrna at the U.S. Cafe. The crinkle cut fries at the one on spring are phenomenal.

The In N Out burger is good but it doesn’t live up to all the hype as many will have you believe. Fatburger has the best burger in LA by FAR!! I know many folks that prefer Tommy Burger over In N Out burger.

The Fatburger here is cool but the burger from the Vortex tops it. I haven’t had Ms Ann’s but I plan to try it out soon. If her burger tops the Vortex burger then it deserves the crown for best burger in the country.

Again, I’d put New Orleans places in the top rank. Port O’Call and Ruby Red’s down the street were tops.

But the Bud’s Broiler chain in New Orleans put out a grated cheddar and chilli burger that was grilled over charcoal on a toasted bun. It might really be the best burger ever. I don’t think even INnOut beat that. They didn’t have very good fries, but they did fried pies beignet-style with powdered sugar at the time of service that were great.

Some cities prohibit charcoal grilling in restaurants but it was widely done in New Orleans. Don’t know if the code allows it in Atlanta or not.

Did these places survive Katrina?

The best burger I had was at a small “hole in the wall” cafe on 17th or 18th Street in Wichita, Kansas which is the beef state - if you will.Years ago the owner would grill the onion and hamburger together while you watch. He’d season the meat where the juices just run down your cheek…….let me slap myself so I can wake up…such memories. However, I will try Miss Ann’s, and she’d better bring it - for sure!

I Like It Simple!

Give me Wendy’s Classic Burger. It has the works…tomatoes, lettuce, onion and cooked to perfection each time…no matter whether in Atlanta, North Georgia, or North Carolina. You can always count on a delicious, juicy Classic Burger from Wendy’s.

I like a burger that I can get a grip on with my teeth…not those whopper and big mac thingies. Can’t stretch my mouth for those.

Man, you are all makin me hungry. Best Burger I’ve had is an hour north of Atlanta in Jasper GA. Hill City Cafe (west of town on GA 53) is a very no frills place with a Cheeseburger in Paradise Mr. Buffett himself would approve. Each one you eat may take 1 month off your expected life span, but I wouldn’t want to think about all those burgers I’d missed when I’m elderly!! They don’t serve beer, but the homemade fries make up for it.

Vortex is good, but I think my favorite commercial burger was at Fatburger’s at the Green Valley Ranch in Las Vegas. Double cheeseburger, bacon, and just a hint of sweet relish. My favorite burgers of all though were my grandmother’s on the grill. She would mix ground beef with a little ground chuck and use salt, cayenne, and a little Worcestshire. Maybe it was because I was a kid, but thinking of her hamburgers on a steamy summer evening sure gets my appetite whetted.

I like dog burgers. I make them myself. I usually like to let the dead dog’s corpse rot for a few days on my back deck so it has that “aged” flavor some of you were talking about. No cheese, but I do make my own squirel bacon that I sometimes add to it. Now you want the tastiest burger in town, c’mon over for you of my dog burgers…oh, and if you have a dog, bring them along…I always need fresh meat!

Carey’s (RIP) was the best burger in ATL area (great name, too). Had to love the ambiance, though, to really appreciate. Five Guys in Alexandria, VA is my current favorite; glad to see them expanding locations, but not the menu—KISS! It doesn’t matter if you get the regular or large fries; they dump the same amount in the bag—just the cup size is different. As for fast-food burgers, Hardees’ thickburgers are hard to beat; meaty, grilled and consistent—horrible fries however. If you find yourself in Melbourne, FL try the Burger Inn on US1; the best in the area for countless years! Say “Hi” to Grumpy Al behind the counter and ask for a chili burger just be prepared for etiquette at the opposite end of the spectrum from Miss Ann’s.

Ann’s truly has the best hamburgers because she makes the patties by hand using real ground beef. It is ridiculous to compare pre-made burgers with real burgers such as hers. By the way she was a police hang out until Zone 6 moved. She has always had a good burger. What everyone misses is Ann’s has been there when the neighborhood was on the upswing, when it was in decline and now that it is being gentrified. She is truly good people.

I’ve had all three of the contending burgers more than a few times, and I’d agree with the author’s conclusion of Ann’s for best in the ATL.

While the ghettoburger gets all the hype, I prefer Ann’s single cheeseburger. Between the ample seasoning and the griddle-cooked onions, it’s simple and to-die-for good. Yes, Ann’s has a small counter and a unique ordering ritual, but it’s worth the time. You can’t argue with something that has worked for over 34 years!

The EARL’s burger quality was consistently good until about a year ago, when the kitchen staff changed. Now it’s hit-and-miss.

The Vortex (L5P, please) does a pretty good burger as well, but it’s the attitude and the tots that make up for occassionally overdone burgers.

Runner Ups: Rush’s in Columbia, SC, Vortex in Little 5, but hands down the best burger in America is Taylor’s Drive In in St. Helena, CA.

I love a good burger and thanks for the recommendations, but you all need to try the Dockside Grill on Lake Lanier. Best burgers that I have ever had. I think it is only open during the summer and I think it is up at Holiday Marina. They are unbeatable. The only down side is that they don’t serve beer there. You can bring your own though. Give it a shot this summer. As for me, it will be a 5 Guys Burger Lunch today.

No doubt, the best burger out there for the money is the new guy in town: Five Guys Burgers. In and Out is also wonderful and their fries are a winner also (fresh potatoes). Never tried the Atlanta winner, so no comment. We know we have good food in Atlanta, so congrats to our city!

It’s hard to believe Miss Ann’s Ghetto Burger tops the national rankings. Her restaurant and burger are more of a novelty experience in my opinion. Her burger really doesn’t taste any different than frying some ground meat in a skillet and throwing it on a bun.

It’d be foolish to leave Highland Tap’s burger off the Atlanta’s Best Burger list. It is right across the street from the aforementioned George’s, whose burgers taste like a freezer burnt Bubba burger. Another of Atlanta’s best burgers can also be found at US Cafe in Smyrna, and of course the Vortex burger is an Atlanta staple.

If we’re talking national rankings then it’d be taboo not to throw names like Bud’s Broiler (New Orleans), Port of Call (New Orleans), and P.J. Clarks (NYC) in the hat.

Hamburgers are my favorite food of all time. There are so many great places to get a good burger. The Vortex, Five Guys, and Rhea’s are all great local joints for a good burger, with The Vortex taking my pick as tops. I haven’t tried Miss Ann’s, but I will someday. I’ve had In-N-Out, Tommy Burger, and Fatburger. All excellent, with Tommy’s being a bit too greasy for my tastes. As far as major national chains go, Longhorn has a great burger. But I think the best burger I’ve ever eaten was at The Chuckbox in Tempe, AZ. Right across the street from ASU’s main campus. Chargrilled with a slice of cheddar, and a fixins bar just like Fuddrucker’s. A Great Big Juan with Cheese (a picture of a large Hispanic guy wearing a Green Bay Packers cheesehead hat is on the menu board) is incredible.

My dad swears by the Kobe Burger at The Clubhouse at Lenox. For $18, it better be incredible!

Ghetto Burger? That doesn’t exactly help the nation’s image of Atlanta. It’s bad enough that the rest of the world thinks everyone in the Dirty South is drinking gin and juice from their pimp cup while rolling in their Escalade with the spinners, we now have to add the Ghetto Burger. Is Memorial Drive really what tourists to Atlanta should go see?

The very best burger I have had was a burger called “Semieburger”. Made in Los Angles, California; Lean rich red beef 1 1/2 inch thick, cooked well-done; drained; with grilled thick ornions, mushrooms; green or red peppers grilled, dill sliced long pickles, with 2 slice of american cheese on both sides, three slices of red tomatoes, lettuce and grilled hamburer buns buns. I opt not to take the fries…since the hamburger was to big that you could feed two people. I did the very best with it as I could, but it was entirely to much to consume. A Great Burger!

Ann’s Snack Bar has a local reputation for great hamburgers, but she must understand that providing courteous and professional service is the key to great success. Who in their right mind would wait forty five minutes for a hamburger? It’s just a hamburger, not a four course meal. Lose the attitude and you will make more money.

The now closed Brandy House had the best burger in town. The Colonnade has the closest thing to it. In 1980 for a brief period there was a place called Lindbergh Landing. The first time I went there, the first thing I noticed was a bag of Kingsford charcoal beside the grill. The burger was unbelievably good. It unseated the B’House as my favorite. But unfortunately, for whatever reason, the establishment was short lived.

It’s a toss-up between Burger Joe’s and the Three Dollar Cafe, both along Roswell Rd. in Sandy Springs. They’re super burgers not just because they’re so big, but the quality of beef is excellent and cooked very well I might add. This is an easy one and worth the drive for the great people of metro Atlanta. This place is just off of Fort Benning in a small town called Cusetta, GA. They are famous for the “Ranger” burger but have many varieties. The place is called the Four Winds Cafe. Bring your appetite as these burgers are nearly the size of a dinner plate. Most men have to order the junior but it is worth ordering the big one just to see it and try. It used to be a whole in the wall place but it is pretty nice now and from what I have heard even better these days after the filming of We Were Soldiers. It was reported the Mel Gibson and the actors nearly ate there everyday and they absolutely loved it. For those of you that don’t like burgers that may be travelling with family I think they have other stuff on the menu too but it has been a while since I have been there.

If your’e ever in Augusta, Try Rienhart’s.Two locations now…Great great burger. Split it with a friend. So big they make their own buns, toasted and to die for. Don’t like Burgers, people from the coast come here to get the fried shrimp. Best in the world. Also, hand cut fries like the Varsity, only Better.

Ann’s is an excellent burger. However, it is enormous and you might consider taking a leftovers box with you. Can’t complain about the value, though.

Having experienced Ann’s and the Vortex (both very good), I would have to say that the best burgers are made from bison and served at Ted’s Montana Grill. Glad to see a couple of other folks here agree.

Best burger I’ve ever had was at the Oak Top Cafe in Sequim, Washington. Comes with waffle fries, which I also love! I also love the Marilyn Burger from Hamburger Hamlet; I’ve eaten those in both LA and DC. I also had a great burger last year at Rare Bar & Grill in Manhattan, one of the few places you can get a truly rare hamburger. (I got mine medium, but my companion got hers rare, and boy, was it rare.)

For easier to get burgers, I prefer Wendy’s (single w/cheese, no onion). I like burgers that actually look like they were “hand-squished” from real ground beef, not sliced off a log of meatlike substance.

I have traveled all over the world and eaten burgers in many different places, but the best burger I ever had was at Labat’s in Pass Christian, Mississippi. It was a greasy, smoky whole in the wall but the burger was FANTASTIC. He made it with a combination of gound beef and hot sausage. It was perfectly greasy and was a large as a dinner plate. When He cooked it, he flattened it. My husband has been trying to recreate it for years. Mr. Labat has passed on and Labat’s was destroyed by Katrina, so you all will just have to take my word for it. IT WAS THE GREATEST!!!!!! And I love a good burger.

Agreed. Had the McDonald burger at the Mugshots in Starkville, MS a few years back. It was highly touted, and lived up to the billing.

Also, the Pittsburger at Primanti Bros. (locations all over Pittsburgh, and two in Fort Lauderdale) is fabulous. Served on thick Italian bread with fries and provolone cheese on top, with lettuce and tomato.

Happened to be in SFO last week and noticed they have a In-N-Out down by the wharf. The writer couldn’t give the award to a chain or it might look like he sacked the awards. But he & everyone else in California knows where the best burgers can be found. Just hope the east coast will someday get some opened. The fries are overated at In-N-Out but the homemade shakes are really tasty.

I would have to say the In-n-out is by far the best that I have had. I am right down the street from Ann’s Snack shop , but have never heard of it or tried it, so maybe In-n-out has competition. Can we get an IN-n-Out hear in Ga.

Havent been to Miss Ann’s yet but for burgers there’s these 2 places in Chattanooga - Durty Nelly’s, Irish-theme pub, their Chili burger & onion ring loaf or Nikki’s an old-style greasy spoon they have great onion rings too. Settle down ATL before you start preaching about Varsity’s O-rings, theyre good too, but Nikki’s arent as greasy. Their burgers YES their O-rings, no.

Those that think In-and-Out is the best burger are the same suburb-dwelling morons who continually rank Papa John’s as the best pizza.. THERE IS A WORLD OUTSIDE STRIP MALLS AND FAST FOOD!! ENJOY IT!!!

Best burger is mine. Grilled to medium, smothered with Roquefort blue cheese and sauteed onions with some grainy country mustard on a crusty roll. Serve with ice-cold beer and a lot of napkins.

But Ann’s is pretty darn good…

    By Key

    March 15, 2007 8:45 AM | Link to this

Ms Ann’s is really good. It’s coupled with the fact that there are only eight seats and she has “rules” that make the experience what it is. In-N-Out burgers are good, but they are thin and half the time don’t taste like real ground beef.. you got to get a In N OUt burger ANIMAL style just to really get your meat, I don’t like their fries either..There may be other places that folks deem better, but she won the award and you got to give her credit for that even with her rules and the wait. My sister requests a Miss Ann burger anytime I go see her in the Caribbean.. not any fast food joint.. she wants miss ann’s ghetto burger and chili cheese fries. People are so close minded. I’m a bit upset about the fact that her place is going to be so crowded, when it used to be so difficult to get a seat before, but I am happy for her that she has more business, but with miss ann.. if the bar is full. It don’t matter. You’re gonna wait regardless.

In and Out Burger is #1 on my list. My friend from California introduced me to it two summers ago and i was highly impressed. Everything is freshly prepared and tastes great! Best fast food burger in the U.S. Only problem about bringing it to GA is that their only factory is located in Los Angeles California and they can only travel so far with their food to keep it fresh. So unless things change and other factories are built it will not be coming to GA anytime soon. That being the case, i have to travel to California or Las Vegas a few times a year so i can have my In and Out fix. As far as any other burgers that stack up to In and Out, the Cheeburger Cheeburger in Sanibel Island, FL was very good and has unbelievable shakes and Onion rings. But in my book, IN AND OUT BURGER IS KING!

Best local chain burger would be Longhorn Steak’s. Best fast food burger is WhataBurger from Texas. But the best of all time would be Jack’s Sandwich Shop in Derby KS, just south of Wichita. A converted one room house where “Jack” had been cooking burgers for so long, the ceiling tiles were yellow and the outside wall below the exhaust fan out back looked like it had a waterfall flowing down it from all the grease. There were only two items on the menu, hamburger and cheeseburger, the only side available was a bag of chips (included) and each of the tables came equipped with a gallon jar of sliced jalapenos for those so inclined. It’s been 20 years since I lived in Kansas, and I still remember it fondly

Without a doubt, the best burger in Atlanta is at the Downwind, the restaurant atop DeKalb Peachtree airport. Not only is it delicious, but your choice of home-made fries or onion rings accompanies it…and the view at night! Wow! As you sit in the restaurant, you can see the runway all lit up and airplanes are arriving and taking off. Just wonderful!

My best local burger recommendation would be at Meehan’s in Vinings. Excellent meat, but the cheese they put on it takes it to the next level. If you’re ever in central New Mexico (the state, not the country) you have to stop in at the Owl Bar and Cafe, San Antonio NM. and get their green chili cheeseburger (the chilies are green, not the burger).

3 Brothers Catering in Atlanta, GA makes the absolute best burgers ANYWHERE. Their burgers are seasoned so well that they don’t need ketchup, mustard, or some “special” sauce, although they’ll make it that way if you like. In-and-Out makes the best FAST FOOD burger, but Blimpies (not the sub shop) in Ann Arbor, MI makes a pretty good burger as well.

Some great mentions here, in particular Brenda’s Bigger Burgers in Fayetteville, Ark. I can attribute about 20 pounds to that place!

For the best burger around, however, you have to go to Reidsville in Tattnall County. Most folks know Reidsville as the home of Georgia State Prison. But it’s also the home of The Drug Store (yes, that’s the name of it). In the back corner of the store is a grill where they serve sandwiches and the best doggone hamburgers anywhere. Big, fresh, juicy. It is definitely worth the trip if you find yourself in southeastern Georgia!

Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, CT takes the crown in my book. While Atlanta as a city has the widest variety of great burgers, you can’t beat the original, opened in 1895. And like Miss Ann, the folks there are also quite particular…Don’t dare ask for ketchup, mustard or mayo.

I know we’re not taking about pizza, but New Haven is tops there, too. Pepe’s the inventor of American pizza, is still the best in the world.
