Ever heard of chocolate gravy?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We hadn’t — until several readers shared their stories with us as part of our ongoing Southern Recipe Restoration Project. (See story and recipe here.) But are we ever glad we have now! Basically, it’s a thin, warm, chocolate pudding that has been served for breakfast or dessert in Southern households for more than a century. It is typically poured over hot, buttered biscuits — although everyone who knows about it seems to have their own little twist or variation. We tried it — and is it ever yummy!

My grandmother used to make chocolate gravy and bicuits on Christmas morning. She explained to us it was the one treat she had growing up because they were to poor growing up to have it but the one time a year. I now make it for my children on Christmas morning, but I also make it a few other times a year as it is to yummy to only have once a year!!!!!

I still eat it. I thought everyone ate it until I moved away from Alabama. People thought I was crazy when I told them I ate cocoa for breakfast on my pancakes or biscuits or just plain bread.

My grandmother made it for my Dad when he was small and made it for me and even my son along with homemade biscuits. I have her recipe but yet to try my own hand at it. May not sound great but it is so good…warm chocolate sauce on soft warm biscuits is truly awesome and truly southern!

I’m from Alabama too and so are my ancestors. I grew up eating red eye gravy and salt pork, but I have never heard of chocolate gravy. I feel deprived.

My AL Granny would cook us Cocoa for breakfast. Put a big spoonful of peanut butter on your plate, pour hot cocoa over it, and “sop” it up with fresh biscuits. Anyone unfamiliar is missing out. My mom can still make it. I need to see if ol’ wifey will try to learn how.

Chocolate gravy was a favorite of my family growing up in Ellijay, Georgia. It was quick easy recipe that would defintely put the weight on. Its wonderful in the winter time with plenty of ice cold milk. Not had any in years, but oh the precious memories of childhood.

My mother still makes chocolate gravy when I’m home for a visit. Growing up in Alabama, I remember this with a simple yellow cake baked in a cast iron skillet was our favorite Sunday dessert. I never knew anyone else did this as well.

Our family has eaten “chocolate syrup and biscuits” (same as chocolate gravy) for 4 generations. The recipe is as follows: 2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup cocoa, 1 cup milk. Mix together sugar and cocoa in a saucepan. Add milk. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally. Cook 5 minutes. Serve over hot homemade biscuits (canned ones do not work the same). Enjoy.

I remember reading that this was one of Elvis Presley’s favorites!! Sounds out of this world. We don’t get this sort of thing here on the Texas South Plains!!! We sometimes miss out on really good stuff!! I WILL try this one!!

I’ve never heard of it, but it sounds good. If you want to try chocolate on biscuits or bread but don’t want to go to the trouble of making the gravy, try putting Nutella on them. It’s a chocolate hazelnut spread that is now found in most big grocery stores. In Europe they eat Nutella over toasted bread at breakfast. It’s also great spread on bananas and strawberries and basically any kind of white bread. Never had it on biscuits, but I’m sure it would be good.

Being from Pa. I grew up on the ‘Yankee’ version. My mom made it with Nestle’s Quick and evaporated milk and thickened it with corn starch. A dash of vanilla and of course a good chunk of butter finished it off. We put it piping hot on vanilla ice cream. Yum!

Yum! I know what I’m having for breakfast Saturday morning. I’ve made homemade buscuits before (with lard and everything… yum) but I think I’ll cheat and use some Pillsbury pop-in-fresh biscuits this time. If it works out, I’ll do it with homemade from scratch busciuts next time. Thanks and keep the old Southern recipies coming. Love them!

Although I grew up in Dunwoody, I went to Bama (Tuscaloosa) and my roommate took me home one weekend to north Alabama. The next morning her mom served biscuits with something like chocolate pudding/gravy on top. Sure I thought it was very unusual but it was interesting having dessert in the morning!
