After the microbrewery boom, it was only a matter of time before small-batch liquors would start catching on. No longer satisfied with the generic stuff, discriminating customers now inquire about such details as where and how a spirit is made. Though still relatively hard to come by, you can find brands like Pappy Van Winkle bourbon in upscale bars around town (for $15-$20 a shot) and Prichard’s Fine Rum made in tiny Kelso, Tennessee in well-stocked package stores such as Green’s. Some insist that the only way to appreciate them is straight up, while others order them in high-end cocktails. Have you made any such discoveries? If so, what is it, where can we get it and how do you like to drink it?

As a country music singer, I find a little nip of my good friend Jack (Jack Daniels) helps soothe the throat and ease the nerves before going on stage and between sets. Maybe I’ll have to get me a bottle or two of these more fancy whiskies and give them a try. Of course, please drink responsibly! And thanks for the ongoing feature on saving Southern food. Great stuff!
