Herren’s cinnamon rolls and beyond
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Theatrical Outfit, the downtown theater that occupies the space that was home to one of Atlanta’s longest-running restaurants, has brought back that establishment’s signature goodie: Herren’s cinnamon rolls. Even though the restaurant has been gone for decades, they’re serving the miniature pastries, baked according to the original recipe, at intermission during actor Tom Key’s performance of Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory.” Do you have memories of these rolls or specialties of Herren’s? Are there other dishes from Atlanta restaurants past you wish were still being served?

I miss Good ol’ Days restaurant/bar. Their Chicken with Almonds flowerpot sandwich and Potatoes Wonderful were unique, and I’m sad that they’re gone.

I ate at Herron’s a few times when I first started working after college. I thought the cinammon rolls were good, but nothing spectacular. As far as being addictive my nomination goes to the yeast rolls at the Colonade, which you can still get.
The restaurant I miss after all these years was a little place called Eats N’ Sweets in VaHighland which closed in the mid 80’s. Eggs Mykanos (scrambled eggs with feta, tomato, greek spices and peppers), whole wheat biscuits, yellow grits and hash browns with hot sauce made on the premises. Plus Patty, one of the sweetest human beings ever to walk the earth, waiting on you and occasionally sitting down at your table to chat. Good times.

I miss breakfast at Good News Cafe in East Atlanta Village. I think it was one of the first new restaurants to open in the EAV when the neighborhood started getting renovated. The service was always slow as molassas in January — it could literally take 45 minutes to get your pancakes and homefries — but worth the wait (I’d bring the New York Times and Sunday AJC and get through most of at least one while I waited).
I also miss DaVinci’s Pizza in Athens. Last time I was there it was closed. Really good stuffed pizza and these great little garlic butter rolls. Yum!
