I Won’t Be Home for Christmas…

It’s inevitable this time of year. There are hungry souls roaming the earth who have no place to eat on Christmas day except out. Or perhaps they can’t boil water. Either way, it’s nice to know that there are restaurants open at where they may find refuge. Here’s the deal about holiday dining: Hotels are always open, and their dining rooms usually are, too. Small ethnic restaurants are often open, too, but it’s always a good idea to call before venturing out — reservations are required for Christmas events at some restaurants and hotels, even if they aren’t needed at other times of the year.

If I had nowhere to hang my hat on Christmas morning (or if my relatives finally wised up and kicked me out) what places are open that I should try? Ethnic Asian? The Ritz? Where’s your favorite place to eat out on the 25th day of December?

Meredith: I have tried The Grape near my house but didn’t think much of it. Is Usher’s wine bar/small plates place better than The Grape? thanks.

On the last three Christmas Days my family had Christmas dinner at the Stone Mountain Inn. They have a Christmas buffet that is reasonably priced (about $25 per person). The atmosphere is nice and it has not been overly crowded.

About four years ago we had Christmas Day dinner at McCormicks & Schmicks. You definitely need a reservation for that because they got 100% booked.

I am curious if there are any traditional (non-ethnic) fare restaurants open for dinner on Christmas.

I would like to inform the community about a mexican restaurant “NO MAS” located on 180 Walker Street. This place is incredible, everything from it’s decor, to the food. Before you enter this lovely kept secret—you must travel thru the home gallery loft—I had a a great tour with the Manager of No Mas—they offer wide scale of choices for those private or group parties and a huge variety of tequila!! As a Concierge, this is my favorite place besides the soul food…

Let’s talk about Glady’s Knight chicken & waffles—-I was some what disappointed with the whole setup, there was debris thoughout the dining room, although the staff was friendly but the manager stated he was new to management so he did’nt know the procedures when greeting Concierges but he did at the end. I would like to see this place become more music inspired, such as art work with music instruments and “framed” pictures instead of just pictures on the wall!! The fact that parking is complimentary behind the building was a huge plus!!

If you want to have a great place to visit, I definitely recommend MAGIC CITY!! Concierge, T Baker

As a Concierge, my job requires knowledge of Atlanta. I enjoy seeing the guest happy with my recommendations. Out of all the places I send my guest, Ray’s in the city on P’tree Street gets the award and then Azio’s in P’tree center—-Special thanks to these folks for great service!!!

Don’t forget The Varsity. I remember going in there one Christmas Day in my younger and wilder days and it was as packed as it normally is everyday.

Tee - Are those places open for Christmas or are you just doing a little advertising?

OK, I’m doing it topsy-turvy. I’m cooking a festive holiday meal Christmas EVE (already made a Chanukah one this past Friday night!) & we’re going OUT Christmas DAY, probably to a Chinese buffet. Or, if a moderately priced (already saving for my Florida trip next month…)American buffet, for instance Golden Corral is open, I think we may opt for that.

Georgia Diner, 1655 Pleasant Hill Rd NW, Duluth, GA is great for some ethnic and non-ethnic. My boyfriend can get turkey dinner and I can get a grilled seafood platter at all at the same place. Family owned and very friendly. :-)

Like Alfreda E. Neuman (Mad magazine huh?)I find The Marietta Diner (Hwy 41 South of the “Big Chicken”) a great place to eat, period. They never ever close. As a patron for the past 13 years (at least twice weekly) I have eaten there on just about every occasion. Large servings. Bring your appetite

Hi, I just wanted to let everyone know that Pacific Kitchen in Inman Park will be open on Christmas Eve! The cuisine is Californian, so if you are in search of something other than ethnic food- you are in luck! Lots of fresh seafood, organic vegetables and, of course you can still get a tasty ribeye.
