Silver Grill closing: Are diners a dying breed?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Silver Grill, a tiny 58-seat eatery at 900 Monroe Drive, has been a much-loved local hangout for Midtowners craving chicken pot pie, peach cobbler and other home-style dishes. But on Dec. 22, owner Kevin Huggins is closing the doors for good. “We’re a diner, and that’s a fading institution,” Huggins said. “The people buying the half-million dollar condos on Peachtree are not going for collard greens and corn bread.” Are American diners such as this one are becoming a dying breed and, if so, is this a bad thing?

Well, of course it’s a bad thing- but it’s just like everything else that’s happening, especially in Midtown. While there’s nothing “wrong” with the progress, there is something wrong with characterless neighborhoods- and Midtown is becoming so. People moving into OUR neighborhoods just don’t seem to care. Too bad….

Ernie, surely you must have had a rare experience ! Sadly, Atlanta and Midtown are losing yet another landmark. Many of us will miss you, and Peggy, you’re one of the best waitresses in the area …. you will be missed but hopefully you will land another local job !

I don’t remember the Silver Grill being all that good. I went a couple of times with friends but it just wasn’t my taste. With so many better places right in the area (Zesto’s on Ponce, Metro Fresh and Mellow Mushroom in Midtown Promenade), etc., I guess it’s hard to compete when the food is bad for you AND not all that great.

The Silver Grill was always crowded for a reason. I’ll definitely miss it. Maybe this article will renew interest in the Grill… Seeger’s stayed open after the AJC wrote about it closing. Why can’t cornbread and collard greens be saved, too??

Their restrictive hours didn’t help…even when I lived in Va-Highland I never went there. They opened too late for me to eat before work, closed before I got off work, and weren’t opened on weekends. There are other places I miss or will miss more (see Kool Korners, Bradshaw’s).

Hi Even though I have never eaten at the Silver Grill, I will miss it. Coming from up north years ago, I grew up with the diner. I travel to Marietta to eat at Marietta diner or when I’m in Rome at the Landmaek diner. I believe diners are unique and if they are ever replaced by more chain restaurants, as they have done on 278 in Hiram. We will be all the poorer for it.

Just wanted to say I am so sorry to see the Silver Grill close. I worked there on and off for about 10 years. I am the cake lady. I now live in Honolulu, but I was able to go home to Atlanta last month and say goodbye. I will miss the Grill when I go home again. There will be no one there to welcome me back with open arms. Goodbye Kevin, Beverly, Vivian, and everyone else who has been dear to me over the years. I love you all. Pete

Talk about this subject at the table:
DeKalb officer resigns in drugs probe:
Dear Readers above is another example of police corruption with one of Dekalb’s finest. My book Dirty Justice-Who Killed Mommy, names some of the same officers who have committed crimes against my family and me, and they are still allowed to patrol the streets of Dekalb County. What is wrong with people that they allow their officials to get away with robbing them eyes wide open? These officers are making decisions regarding its citizen’s safety. Please log onto www.kllundypublishingllc.com and review what they have done to destroy my family and allow someone too get away with causing my wife’s death justice.
