A bargain not even Clark Howard could top

Joy Howard’s youngest son makes a living saving radio listeners money. But here’s a bargain even Clark Howard couldn’t beat.

Nearing 85, Joy met Art Chase, 85, after both moved into Parc at Buckhead, the elegant high-rise for seniors behind Phipps Plaza.

Over meals in the dining room, they discovered a shared love of travel. Then Art started riding the elevator to Joy’s floor to “pick her up” before dinner. And soon he was escorting her back to her place afterward.

“We just gravitated toward each other,” Joy said.

Eventually the two decided they’d prefer to live as one. Saturday night, family and friends gathered in Parc’s second-floor card room, transformed into a wedding hall.

“It’s always such a joy to marry a couple of young kids,” said Rabbi Alvin Sugarman, The Temple’s rabbi emeritus, who officiated.

Art’s daughter Cynthia Chase walked with him down the aisle. Joy was escorted by her four children. Clark, Gary and Neal Howard followed as sister Jackie Howard walked arm-in-arm with their mother.

“People think he’s such a big-shot,” Joy said of Atlanta’s favorite cheapskate. “You should see him with his brothers. He’s my baby, but he’s not famous around them.”

Jackie, proprietress of the high-end stationery shop Paces Papers,
took charge of many of the details including the exquisite invitations that read, “It’s never too late to fall in love.”

“The two of you are absolute evidence of that,” Sugarman said.

Two widows in their twilight years, finding love again when neither expected it? Priceless, indeed.
