Too much holiday togetherness?

The Mansion on Forsyth Park in Savannah: Our home away from the family’s home

We’ll be heading down to Savannah next week to celebrate Christmas with family.

And we’ve booked our own accommodations.

Over the years, we’ve found bunking under a different roof makes for a more pleasant visit. There’s no sleeping on the couch, or waiting in line to take a shower.

Perhaps because it’s a holiday week, we found an excellent rate at the elegant Mansion on Forsyth Park.

Do you stay with family when you visit family, or seek your own rooms at the inn?

I stay with my family. Usually one of my sisters. And during the holiday, there is nothing like being around family. Thats what they are for. Usually when one person is waiting for say, the bathroom, etc. everyone else is usually making small talk, eating, so on, so on. We gather around on piled up blankets and enjoy the moment. After all, its just that only a moment. Why not spend it with the ones you love.

Some people do better when they don’t hang together all the time. Every family has someone member that is a whiney, needy, narcissistic, self absorbed drama type person and having the ability to take a break is priceless.

I can usually handle staying with family for a day or two, but any longer than that and I want to strangle somebody. Definitely need a place to get away.

I agree with Bobba. Everyone family has one. I do, and know my husband’s family has several. Having your own space while away is a plus, especially, your own bathroom. When you leave, you don’t have to help clean up. Being away is our vacation too. Our experience is that when we stay at a relatives house, you feel obliged to pay for meal/s out and grocery shop. The little bits here and there add up. By the time you do that, a hotel is cheaper. We found this out on our first trip to LA to visit a brother in law. Now, we get a hotel, come out cheaper, have a wonderful visit, and are relaxed when we leave. The host is more rested too.

My sister welcomes me to stay in her home. We can sit by the fireplace and catch up on things that we don’t want to discuss on the phone or emails. I do my part to make sure all is tidy when I leave.

I’m very big on NOT sleeping on futons, pull-out sofas, air mattresses or anything else that is not a bed.

The money spent on hotels is sooo worth it. During the holidays hotels often offer very good rates. I guess their bookings are down because people are either staying at home or sleeping on their relatives’ futons.

Not me!!!

Much prefer staying at a hotel when visiting family for all the reasons Bobba and no futons mentioned. However, my Savannah family is so close they insist and are offended when I do. As long as my Mom was alive I’d put up with staying with family so not to cause hard feelings. Now that she’s deceased it’s preferable to stay hotel/motel. Not the Mansion though as lovely and hospitable as it is. At its Grand Opening the manager took a couple of Savannah families that he knew would have special memories of the place privately through and explained the new gaitey and refurbishment shouldn’t be taken as sacrilige but as a celebration of sharing its past forever with Savannah’s future. We agreed and all drank a champagne toast to the occasion. Still it would be difficult for me since it was the premier Fox and Weeks of the city …a mortuary… and both parents were buried from there. As muchI love the place just couldn’t spend much bedtime there. Have fun… and you will!

I have gone both ways in visiting the fam — bunking down in crowded quarters, and staying in more luxe accommodations at a nearby motel. I have to say I prefer the latter, even if it costs more. But I am not opposed to staying with the family. After all, what is a holiday without some FFF*?
