Vine in Va-Hi closes today
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Vine, shown here in a photo from its Web site, closes Nov. 29
Here’s a bittersweet post-Thanksgiving bargain for you.
Wine is half-price all day Saturday at Vine. The reason isn’t exactly one to cheer. I got an e-mail from the restaurant Friday night saying Saturday will be its last day.
Even after a change in management and ownership and improved menu, the Virginia-Highland wine bar and eatery is closing its doors.
They didn’t say much more in the e-mail besides announcing the closing.
“To say thank you, all wine will be half-price all day Saturday,” Vine’s short missive read. “We hope you join us!”
When my colleague Meridith Ford Goldman first reviewed the wine bar-restaurant in 2004, things were so dreadful she gave it no stars. (She’s only done that twice).
But returning earlier this year Goldman found lots to like. Here’s her two-star review.
Will you miss Vine? Will you go by for today’s half-priced close-out?

Wow! I’ve had two recent experiences @ Vine and both were exceptional. We are sorry to see Vine go.

First things first, Ms. Brett - the name of the restaurant is/was Vine, not The Vine … As for the closing, well - karma can be fast and ugly sometimes … ! ! !

It’s kind of like the new virus among us, which is people saying “THE Virginia Highlands” as in, “we love going out in THE Virginia HIGHLANDS.” It makes my soul throw up. It’s just “Virginia Highland.” “We love going out in Virginia Highland.” NOT Virginia HIGHLANDS. And certainly not “THE Virginia Highlands.” Jesus Christ.

What are you talking about? Nowhere do I see anything that says “The Vine”.
And I do love to go down to the Virginia Highlands to dine, Matt. I like to eat down there at either Taco Max, Wisteria’s, or at Murphee.
Sorry I am being ugly, but I am a frustrated Dog fan and I want to take it out on somebody. The Georgia blogs are full.

In total agreement with Derek, Matt sounds as if he’s arrogant and pretentious, furthermore, no reason to bring Jesus Christ into such a stupid post like Matts.

I live right down the street and never went. They couldn’t overcome the perception that the original vine wasn’t that good. Too many good options in the neighborhood and in Atlanta. A good restaurant can work there - checkout the crowds at the new Taco place - even Food 101 seems to do well.
Hopefully something new and good will open there. There is no good Chinese anywhere in this area. The Tiburon Grille was certainly good.
I bet Diesel is next - there never seems to be anyone there. Hope they survive.

Matt, your post cracked me up! As a resident of virginia highland, I appreciate your clarification of the correct pronunciation for the neighborhood! So many OTPers can’t seem to get it right. I tried Vine many times over the years and had an overall good experience and the wine list was extensive; I am sad to see it go.

I tried Vine once.
I couldn’t have gotten better service. Of course, we were the only people there (4 of us). If I’m not mistaken, it was a Saturday night 6 or 7 months ago, close to closing time.
The food was exceptional. I had the braised short ribs. I would LOVE to have the recipe!
As for drinks, I was dissapointed. I was not in the mood for some of the more heady wines and asked for Pinot Grigio, that was a wine they don’t carry. So, I asked for Diet Coke or unsweet tea - would you believe, they didn’t have that either???
I’m sad to see them go. It was a nice atmosphere and wonderful food!
In the meantime - anyone know where I can get the recipies?

I don’t live in Virginia Highlands or anything, but, I dunno, I can appreciate what Matt was saying. My take on his complaint was that it had less to do with the specifics of Vine or Virginia Highland, than it has to do with the general loss of quality regarding the specific essence of things, and the overall generalization of details that give consequence to shared meaning. Not to overgeneralize but, in my opinion, it’s just this type of lack of discrimination that has a lot to do with the downward trend in the narrative quality of books and movies.
Little things mean a lot.

I have lived intown for twenty years. I have lived in Morningside and Druid Hills which both border the neighborhood discussed in this article. So I am not some OTP’er who doesn’t know what I am talking about when I say that tons of people in this area including myself and friends who live in the area say “the Highlands” when referring to this neighborhood. Give me a break people. My good friend who lives on Kentucky calls it the Highlands, too. I hope she avoids Matt, though. The thought of his soul vomitting over something so small and meaningless is pathetic. There are several streets in the neighborhood with Highland in the name so saying “the Highlands” is not wrong or inappropriate. Now lighten up please.

We used to live within walking distance of Tiburon, and we SO loved that restaurant. Vine was a terrible disappointment; even going there for drinks a while after their disastrous opening, my appetizers were salty and not up to par. I’m surpried it stayed open as long as it did.

Vine was like a 2nd home to my husband and I. Once the original Sala closed, we ventured across the parking lot and found a wonderful place. We stuck with Vine through 2 ownership changes and are very happy we did. The most recent owners are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. As for the food - it’s amazing what happens when you provide constructive feedback. Like FormerNHighland, we too had some salty dishes when the recent owners took over. We provided our feedback, and shortly thereafter, the food was outstanding. My husband and I got to know the owner and chef personally and think their family are outstanding individuals. We will miss the good times we had and are thankful for all the friends we made.
