Ryan Adams to perform for free* in Atlanta

53683970_27c862ccc5_o.jpg

Ryan Adams will perform March 20 at the Fox for free - for the patrons who went to his Oct. 17 concert in Alpharetta. It lasted just around an hour before Adams, complaining he’d lost his voice, abruptly left the stage.

SB covers all sorts of charity events, so here’s a little twist on that theme.

Alt-country rocker Ryan Adams is performing with The Cardinals at the Fox on March 20. It’ll be a free concert for the fans who attended his Oct. 17 concert at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park.

Or tried to, anyway.

Adams rocked for about an hour that chilly night in Alpharetta, complaining on and off that he was losing his voice. Then, he abruptly left the stage, leaving Verizon staffers flummoxed and fans irritated.

Adams fans have come to expect the unexpected, but this episode was especially poorly timed - about two weeks before the release of Cardinology, a tight set of alt rock with some country and R&B influences. (Ironically, it’s a more optimistic work for the newly clean and sober Adams.)

A heartfelt blog posting from Cardinals drummer Brad Pemberton shortly after Adams’ disappearing act apologized to fans and explained that the guys had all been sick.

Adams posted a blog of his own a day or two later, a stream-of-consciousness opus on how he was working on forgiving himself, but it was quickly taken down. I think I have it somewhere. I’ll post it if I can find it.

Anyway, for those of you who made the trek Oct. 17, here’s how you get into the Fox for free.

You can exchange tickets in person at the Verizon or Fox box offices or mail them in.

The Fox is at 660 Peachtree St., Atlanta, 30308. The Verizon’s at 2200 Encore Parkway, Alpharetta, 30009.

Here are the hours they’re open:

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Box Office: Monday, November 24 - Wednesday, November 26; (M-W Noon-4pm) Monday, December 1 - Friday, December 19 (M-F Noon-4pm) Monday, January 5 - Friday, January 9 (M-F Noon-4pm)

Fox Theatre Box Office: Monday, November 24 - Friday, January 9 Monday - Friday: 10am-6pm Saturday: 10am-3pm Closed Sundays

The deadline for the switch is 5 p.m. Jan. 9, and only patrons who bought full price tickets get the Fox freebies. If you’re mailing them in to switch, the envelope must be postmarked by Jan. 9. Be sure to provide a return mailing address, and it’s a good idea to photocopy of your tix before mailing.

Call 404-733-5012 with questions.

I’ll be there. Will you? What do you think of Cardinology?

Not as good as, say, Gold or Whiskeytown’s Stranger’s Almanac, but better than most - good in fact!

I couldn’t go to the Verizon show - but I can definitely make it to the Fox - better venue anyway (for the season)

Adams is a fantastic performer, but as moody as an 8th grade girl. Nice gesture towards his fans, but will it be enough? I heard many say they were finished w/ his punk way’s after the Verizon show. Question - if you can not locate the ticket stub, is there an alternate way to get a Fox ticket?

Well, when you have zero talent and attempt to play guitar, you better be giving it away for free. More trash, just free now.

That’s great that he’s making up the date. Good Call.

I wil ask if there’s a Plan B. for fans who went Oct. 17 and didn’t hang on to their tickets. Of course I imagine the Fox would be happy to just sell you one, if you don’t mind shelling out the cash for another concert.

By the way someone who was there Oct. 17 shot a little amateur video. You can judge for yourselves whether RA’s voice is quitting on him.

The video is on Youtube

I love this. The man’s voice starts to go and people raise hell about it. But check this, yo: my guess is that the people whining are the same asshats who were there yelling “Play Wonderwall!” Right, because he has nothing else in catalog except an Oasis song. You people suck, and I hope that you don’t go to the Fox. It’ll be better for those of us who enjoy music.

I keep all my ticket stubs (never know when you’ll see the next Beatles in a tiny club).

Verizon is a crappy venue so I really look forward to seeing the Cardinals at the Fox … for free!

I was an unhappy fan that nite. Not because of his inability to perform but because it seems like he should be able to anticipate his voice going out and have a plan B. His voice goes out pretty often. An opening band would have been ok…or let Neal Casal (guitar/vocals) sing more. I felt bad for the people next to me that drove to see him from Savannah.

I was yelling “PLAY SUMMER OF ‘69!” But he wouldn’t do it. I don’t know why…

I have a better idea. Instead of a “free” show…just refund our money for pulling a scam. The first…and most definitely LAST time I give you the time of day.

For those who didn’t keep their tickets but saved the confirmation email from Ticketmaster … if you bring a copy of the email to Verizon that shows your seat locations, they will give you Fox tickets. I tried to get Ticketmaster to send me a duplicate of the ticket and they were totally unhelpful. Next I called the Fox and although they were pleasant they couldn’t help … but they did tell me that if you buy your tix thru Tickemaster, the venue where the show is held will have an account in your name. So Verizon should have an account for you as long as you can establish where your seats were.

I flew in from Houston to see the Verizon show. Now I am supposed to fly over again? What if he has another hissy fit? I guess the moral is, “Don’t go to great effort to see a self-centered little punk.” Besides, he ain’t that great!

We did exchange our tickets but I’m only coming from 72 Marietta Street. Flying in from Houston is another matter! I’m not sure I would make the return trip.
