Looking ahead to the Crystal Ball

The Arthritis Foundation’s Georgia chapter recently hosted a kickoff luncheon at the Buckhead Ritz-Carlton to gear up for the 27th annual Crystal Ball.
The event, themed “Enchanted Evening,” will be Oct. 18 and will feature a garden decor, silent auction and musical entertainment. The Crystal Ball raises awareness and funds for arthritis research, programs and services that directly support the nearly 1.7 million children and adults in Georgia living with arthritis.
“Enchanted Evening” celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Arthritis Foundation and honors Delta Air Lines, a long time corporate supporter.
Tom and Eileen Rosencrants are the co-chairs, and Jane Dean is advisory chair. For more information, see the web site.

You’ve heard it before: less really is more

Phoebe and Jim Howard hosted a fun book signing and cocktail reception at Max & Company to celebrate the release of “Lulu,” by designer-socialite Lulu de Kwiatkowski.
“I think everyone inside them has a little bit of style,” said de Kwiatkowski, owner of New York-based Lulu DK Fabrics see the site. “They need confidence.”
The mistake many folks make when trying to create inviting interiors?
“Not editing enough,” she said. “You want to feel like you can breathe.”
Phoebe Howard, who gave a quick tour through Max & Company, had similar advice. Her guidance brings to mind Coco Chanel’s famous advice before stepping out for the night - take one thing off. Likewise, Howard says people ought to think about displaying the best or favorite of their collection, not the whole collection.
The sipping and browsing crowd included David Coursey, Ann Davis, Paul Hagedorn, Kelly Hansen, Jesse Harrison, Suzanne Laurita, Liz McDermott, Angela Patrick and Mimi Williams.
The ‘Fly loves bow-ties
Since Memorial Day officially rings in seersucker weather, what better time to tell you about the latest doings of the Atlanta Bow Tie Society? Launched in 2007 to support teen-focused organizations during the December holiday season with gifts and gift certificates, held an April 20 reception at the home of Eleanor Ringel Cater, the AJC’s renowned former film critic.
Founding member Scott Willett, president of Willett Honda South, noted the important function the ABTS serves by reaching out to at-risk teenagers.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard during the holiday season that Atlanta area shelters are full of Barbies, and children’s toys, with nothing for teenagers,” said Willet, who attended the reception with wife Kelly. “Someone needs to show these teenagers they care. More often than not, if we don’t, local gangs will.”

Last December, ABTS donated gifts and gift certificates valued at more than $10,000 to three local charities. Guests at the reception included Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr, Tom Houck, Chris and Leanne Shaw, Ellenwood and Tom Barton, Lisa and Bill Tush and Anne and Dave Sapp.
The ABTS wants to recruit up to 150 members this year and plans to hold a membership reception this August, and a gala, the Atlanta Bow Tie Ball, in early December. To get involved e-mail atlantabowtie@hotmail.com.

The scene down south
A fun crowd of ATL fabsters hit the road for the Serenbe community in Palmetto for the opening of the Newington Gallery, featuring the photography of Greg Newington, who greeted guests along with wife Maripat.
The weather was great so everyone stepped outside to enjoy Stephen Satterfield’s spread of wine, honeycomb, gourmet cheeses and nuts.
The crowd included Steve and Nancy Fallon, Meridy and Woody King, Katie and West Johnson, Michael and Deborah Bald, Christine and Curt Mann, Jean Marie and Alan Quarterman, Nan and Rawson Haverty, Laura and Jay Saad, Weedie and Mark Stowers, Sally and David Hopkins, Shelly and Cole Sawyer, Elizabeth and Neil Dobbs, Ann Marie and Vance White, Marie and Steve Nygren and Diana Conway.
Here and there
Silk, the Asian fusion restaurant in Midtown, hosted a farewell dinner for United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon as he wrapped up his recent trip to Atlanta. Ban was joined by Korean Consul General Kwang Jae Lee. The dignitaries enjoyed a six-course meal of prosciutto salad, shark fin soup, assorted sushi, kobe steak, inaniwa udon noodles, and green tea mousse with gold flakes.

Attorney Elizabeth Johnson will be jetting off to Tuscany after submitting the winning bid during “Purse Strings,” held April 30 at the Biltmore to benefit Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Atlanta. More than 100 handbags, wallets and accessories from local artists and boutiques were auctioned during the event. The crowd included Atlanta Gas Light President Suzanne Sitherwood, Atlanta Development Authority president Peggy McCormick and Suzanne Boas, president of the CCCS of Greater Atlanta. …
