Do you work for a Miranda Priestly?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

We want to hear all about it as “National Boss Day” approaches.
Derided in some quarters as a cooked-up “Hallmark Holiday,” the blessed event is observed annually on Oct. 16, to recognize the good and kindhearted people signing our paychecks.
So sure, we’d love your heartwarming tales of inspired leadership. And if you happen to have a funny horror story that could be out of “The Devil Wears Prada, send that, too!
Post your story here or email jbrett@ajc.com

We have a new principal at my school this year. He has about seven years’ experience in education, and is extremely insecure. As he only had one year as an assistant principal prior to being appointed principal, he really does not know how the school operates. He screams at anyone who deigns to question or disagree with him. Friday we received an e-mail from his secretary, Cruella de Vil, suggesting that departments or teams get together to buy presents for him, the assistant principals and the curriculum coordinator. In the past, we have just passed the hat and everyone donated a few dollars or nothing as they saw fit. I’m pretty sure that this is an attempt to see where the loyalty, if you can call it that, lies. I work in a department of just two people, so for us to buy for four people, we are going to have to come up with a rather large amount of cash. I agree that it is just another cooked-up holiday. Since the peons usually make less than management, we shouldn’t have to buy a present for them.

Wow, Samiam, I am shocked that they are begging for gifts for bosses day. That doesn’t start at my school til Christmas….they make 2-3 times what we do, yet we buy them presents…and while we’re at it, the counselors get gifts too. I don’t mind the clerks, as they work their a@@’s off. Oh, and what about the special ed lead teacher…she needs a little something…and if you give to her, you need to give to the probe lead teacher (all that testing wears them out). Oh wait…the LSTC with all the new technology, well, he’s beat….arg! Last year we rebelled. In my neck of the school we gave to the custodian. Bless his heart, he works so hard and doesn’t make much…he was so touched, he cried. Forget boss’ day…let’s have custodian’s day. But, if you have to give here’s an idea for the selfish, present seekers: make a donation to a charity in their honor…and dare them to complain!! mwaaa aaaa aaaaa!!!

I do NOT work for Miranda Priestly. I work for a wonderful company and my boss would be embarassed if he thought for one second that his employees were planning on buying him a gift for Boss Day. He thinks he works for us. I’m so lucky.
Did I mention that I love my job?

By far the absolute worst job I have ever had was when I worked as a personal assistant for the CEO of a local company. She was certifiably insane.
My duties included making her bed to her exact specifications during which I often found evidence of her latest sexual romps (despite her proclamations of celibacy because “I’m more than just my body!”); attempting to pay for her many spending sprees at Neiman’s even though most of her credit cards were maxxed out; walking her senile dog then recording the size and texture of it’s bowel movements; attempting to return years-old office supplies to OfficeMax because they didn’t “work anymore” (yeah, because your electric stapler’s from 1986!); and picking up her clothes from the tailor and dry cleaner where all of the employees hated her because she routinely yelled at them and refused to pay them because of their “poor workmanship.”
This woman was/is an utter nightmare. She used to call me drunk and high at night asking me to get something from her office (which was 2 blocks from her home). She would then scream at me that I was an “ungrateful, stupid brat” when I refused. She had absolutely no respect for her employees, and she engaged in shameful and illegal business practices. When I finally quit (after giving her more than a month’s notice), she asked when I was coming back. I told her, “Um, never?” Her response was that I had told her I would be taking a vacation then returning, “You never said you were going to stop working for me. Anyway, you can’t leave without training someone new.” I didn’t say anything else to her as I walked out of the office. Later, I received my final check plus a huge bonus from the business manager with a note that read, “For your troubles. I understand.”

It’s inappropriate to buy a gift for your boss. Check any etiquette book and forward a copy to Cruella. Good luck!

Yes, my boss is psycho. Never know how to approach her. It’s like she’s bipolar. She’s also fat so we nicknamed her “The Devil Wears Mossimo”

I love to hear the stories of these women (& men) who get away with any thing-particularly from my friends who are personal assistants or nannies.
The best one was the wife of a real estate mogul was frantically trying to find “someone” to help her with something at the house-the nanny was out with the kids, the housekeeper at the market, the gardener on vacation…so she resorted to calling hubbys office and demanding that someone there come and help her the wife was EXTREMELY insistant….so hubby’s assistant hoofs it across town to the boss’ house….only to UNLOAD THE DISHWASHER.

Wow Dizzy! You should write a memoir. Your old boss makes Miranda Priestly seem tame.
