Baby panda gets a name!

Say hello to Xi Lan (pronounced shee-lahn), which means “Atlanta’s joy.”

Officials at Zoo Atlanta have settled on a name for the newest panda cub The name means Atlanta’s joy.

Young Xi Lan got his name in a ceremony at the Grant Park zoo in front of delegates from China’s Chengdu Research Base facility and local panda watchers. Following Chinese tradition, Xi Lan was named after the first 100 days of life.

Zoo Atlanta held a public contest to name the latest panda cub. Visitors to the zoo and its Web site were able to chose among 12 names.
