Baby panda gets a name!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Say hello to Xi Lan (pronounced shee-lahn), which means “Atlanta’s joy.”
Officials at Zoo Atlanta have settled on a name for the newest panda cub The name means Atlanta’s joy.
Young Xi Lan got his name in a ceremony at the Grant Park zoo in front of delegates from China’s Chengdu Research Base facility and local panda watchers. Following Chinese tradition, Xi Lan was named after the first 100 days of life.
Zoo Atlanta held a public contest to name the latest panda cub. Visitors to the zoo and its Web site were able to chose among 12 names.
What do you think of the name? Have you seen Xi Lan yet?

Poor little Xi Lan, suffering from the 2nd child syndrome. I bet most Atlantans didn’t even know that another panda was born. There sure isn’t the same hoopla that Mei Lan had. He’s still a cutie, though!

Well Kristie,
I must say the first is always the most exciting. Besides, they will be shutting down panda cam at the end of this month so we wont be able to follow Xi like we did with Lani.

Looks to me like atlanta is sick of the chinese, the faux-teens the chinese passed as girl’s olympic gymnasts, the lip-synching vunderchild who couldn’t sing do re mi at the opening ceremonies, and now, this pathetic excuse for a bear, which probably isn’t even a real panda.
I told you the zoo would lose money unless you named your pandas something popular, something hip hop, gee, I cant imagine what name could have turned this Panda thing around, oh, I dont know, could it be……Bling Bling?
But you guys know it all. Lets introduce more obscure mandarin and seschuan names into the lexicon so even more people can lose interest in pandas.
camera to midget bear talking to older, taller bear: “The ranger’s not going to like this post, yogi…”
“nevermind, boo boo”
BOO BOO! That’s it! We should call the next panda Boo Boo!

* The baby panda at the zoo was cute…from what I saw of it. The zoo had the baby panda in an enclosure on a panda cam. Yes I could see the panda on the TV they had there but it wasn’t good enough. I don’t think you should make a big deal about something that you don’t even show in person. The only reason I wanted to go to the zoo was to see the baby panda and then it was a total let down to not be able to really see it. But, the other pandas were really cute though.*
