Mei Lan meets her adoring public
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The first Atlantan to see Mei Lan, America’s newest giant panda cub, in person Friday morning during its inaugural public viewing at Zoo Atlanta had a relevant question.
“Why isn’t the mommy going over to the baby?,” 4-year-old Megan Dobso of Fayetteville asked her mother.
The answer was obvious to more than a dozen members of the media who were taping, photographing and observing the cub’s every wobble: While Mei Lan was tentatively exploring her new surroundings, Lun Lun, her 9-year-old mother, was busy eating.
Leaning against a tree limb in the pandas’ temperature-controlled “dayroom” habitat, Lun Lun was so preoccupied with munching bamboo that when her 4-mnth-old cub came to climb on her, she fended off her 16-pound baby with a raised leg or arm, as if to say, “Not now, kid, I’m starving.”
Mei Lan, undaunted, tried repeatedly to get some attention. But Lun Lun wasn’t buying it. So, after 45 minutes of touring the habitat — balancing on a branch and toppling off, walking in what looked like slow-motion, trying in vain to scale an opening back into her den — the baby cub did what tuckered-out youngsters tend to do.
She lay down and fell asleep.
“It’s amazing, she’s so cute,” said Kim Dobso, Megan’s mom. “I get tears in my eyes she’s so cute. We can’t get enough of her.”
The zoo thinks a lot more folks feel the same way, although there was no crowd early Friday. Zoo officials suggest those wanting to see the panda cub come early in the morning to the zoo in the coming days.

Janet, your comment about the idiot Jeff being a yankee b/c he doesn’t care was out of line. I’m a northerner and I do not share the same sentiments as our buddy Jeff. Secondly, calling someone a Yankee is so 1880. It’s 2007, use the proper term. As for Jeff, he’s only posting those rude remarks for the controversy. Congratulations Jeff! You’re a genius. Pun intended….

If you would all stick to the point, that would be the Panda, and quit humoring Jeff by giving him the attention he is after, he will eventually get bored and go somwhere else. Its just like dealing with my 5 year old. The Panda is such a great addition, we are driving up from Florida this weekend to see it live instead of on the TV. My daughter loves it.

I think the bears will bond after time…its sort of like when a mom gives her kid up for adoption, and later her kid finds her. It’s awkward for a while, but then you get used to it.

The next time you are in a crowd of 1500-2000 people, just think about this: that’s how many Giant Pandas there are left in the world! This very elusive, peaceful, shy creature is a symbol of peace and kindness all over the world. That’s why it’s important to celebrate the birth of these rare animals! Mei Lan is very special to the world, not just to Zoo Atlanta and our city.

I have watched the Panda Cam since Mei Lan was born. I can’t wait to see her in person. She is simply precious. Some human mothers should take lessons from Lun Lun regarding unconditional love and take care of their babies just as well. No one taught her, it was all instinct. Well done Lun Lun.

I’m a big fan of the panda and think she’s great. But, please people, stop calling her a bear. Pandas are not bears. Yes, they call the baby a cub, but aren’t pandas actually in the raccoon family?

I feel sorry for the bloke named Jeff. How unfortunate he couldn’t use the panda experience as a learning one; perhaps he knows all about giant pandas already. We here in Calgary AB Canada are thoroughly enjoying what we see with the baby and her mom, not to mention the great coverage by AJC. THANKS TO ALL for providing the opportunity.

Liasmom— as of 1999- Giant Panda Bears have been classified as bears. They are in the Family Ursidae (the bear family). Therefore— Zoo Atlanta is correct in calling her a cub and a bear.

Jeff, it would appear you are just ignorant. Every one of your posts contains a misspelling. As you appear to be a Tech fan, there are only two logical conclusions. You either aren’t smart enough to go to Tech or you attended there and their standards have dropped. Stop picking on the pandas, Ralph and the people who want to share some good news for a change.

Lol. All of these comments about arguing are pointless. Jeff, honestly in the beginning your comment about it being just a bear, if you didn’t like the panda, why did you leave a comment in the first place? You didn’t have to complain to a bunch of people who obviously like pandas.
And secondly, it’s actually hard to breed captivated Pandas so the birth is truly rare and beautiful in the U.S.. That’s why it is front page news.
Now please, can these comments stay on subject about the Panda and not ganging up on someone who disagrees. =]
I think Mei Lan is adorable. <3 Huge Panda Fan.
