Panda’s big debut
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It looks like the public debut for Mei Lan, Zoo Atlanta’s giant panda cub, will be this weekend.
The baby panda, which has been nurtured behind the scenes since her Sept. 6 birth, will be presented to the media in her habitat at the zoo Friday morning.
After that, she may stay on public view, if only on a limited basis.
Zoo spokeswoman Susan Elliott said anyone happening to visit the zoo Friday might see Mei Lan and her mother, Lun Lun, in the giant panda habitat. But there are no guarantees. It’s up to the pandas whether they will be outside, or back in their den.
“When the media preview happens, she may just decide to stay out,” Elliott said. “t’s up to her now. Both Mei Lan and Lun Lun will have access to be out after that.”
The zoo has been conducting trials with the wobbly-walking cub in the panda habitat in recent days, and she has stayed out anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. “It’s been increasing every day,” Elliott said. Elliott said Saturday offers a better chance than Friday for the public to see the cub.
More details will be announced at Friday morning’s press conference Come back to ajc.com after 8 a.m. for more information.
Zoo Atlanta opens to zoo members at 9 a.m. Friday and to the general public at 9:30 a.m.

Can’t wait to see her in the habitat! She is so gorgeous, I’m planning to visit her from NY in April (with the Mets in town to boot!). Can’t get enough of her—any new video or photographs would be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering what was going on with Mei Lan. We haven’t received an update in a while. Please post some recent pics.

Our 1 year old son Logan watches her everyday on the web cam. I cannot wait to show him in person.

The Atlanta Zoo has done such an excellent job of keeping us current on Mei Lan since her conception, birth, and progress via Panda cam and lots of pictures and stories since. Now…the introduction to the public is a proud and exciting moment for the Zoo and all of Atlanta on an international level. Thank you Atlanta Zoo—-you have made us proud!

I can’t wait to see little Mei Lan, I’m even considering buying a digital camera I’ll probably never use just to take pictures of her. I hear that Mei Lan actually translates into “Beautiful Orchid” does anyone know if this is true?

Michelle, dont you dare go near that panda with a flash camera. Do you know what would happen to you if that panda monster got his paws on the camera after you startled him with flash? At that close range?
You know, these are wild animals, and they’re supposed to rip things apart, make weapons out of them, and then spread mayhem and destruction in every direction. that’s their job.
So keep your distance, keep you arms and legs back from the cage, and never startle a panda with a flash bulb. As a safety measure, always have a picnic basket with you to distract the beast if he manages to grab you, or your children. It’s your only chance.

Well, I didn’t think you needed a flash for the outdoors.

I’m a Chicago bank executive with a very stressful job. Mei Lan’s updates and pictures bring a smile to my face and and lowers my stress considerably. Thank you Atlanta for allowing us access to your bundle of beauty. “Go Bears!!”

My name is Ling Ling and I’m a panda at the National Zoo. As a former child panda, I know the difficulties young pandas face…victimization, exploitation by zoos for financial profit, substandard imported bamboo shoots…and my organization represents the younger generation of pandas. We are affiliated with Paul Petersen (from Father Knows Best) and share legal representation with his association. Mei Len is very young and impressionable and please respect her rights. Thank you.

Lun looks very wary and protective with the cub outside (are they outside? hard to tell). As usual, Mei Lan is a sleepyhead and doesn’t seem to be bothered by her new environment. How did she get there…did Lun drag her there, did she follow her mom, or did the keepers place her there? How about some more video? Can’t wait to see how she navigates a more natural ground underfoot.

Animal Planet is airing several panda programs today and through the weekend. “Baby Panda’s First Year” was on yesterday and airs again today at 2:00pm. It’s about Tai Shan, Washington Zoo’s cub. A saw a bit of it last night and you actually get to hear some of the sounds a cub makes. In ZooAtlanta updates, there are frequent references to vocalisations, including the “chirp” that indicates stress, but so far the very brief video clips are mostly silent or have voiceovers that do not allow us hear these sounds.

GMC, Thanks for posting the info. I was just about too. I saw the “baby’s first year” segment and it was really entertaining and I learned a lot about pandas. Doesnt it seem like Tai Shan was much more active when he was Mei Lan’s age than she is? I have yet to see her walk and everytime I look at the panda cam she is always sleep.

It does seems Tai Shan was more active but it appears he was introduced to a more stimulating and natural environment at an earlier age, whereas Lun Lun and Mei Lan inhabit a stark, slick concrete nest and den. I guess if I didn’t have anything to arouse my curiosity, I’d probably just flop over and sleep the day away too.
