Some names didn’t make the cut

Not every name for the new baby panda evoked images of Atlanta, or conjured visions of moons and stars. Some offbeat suggestions Zoo Atlanta received from internet bloggers:

Black-Eyed Pea

Hai Yall

Scarlett O’Beara

Bling Bling

Sonny Sonny

Shirley Shirley

Hip-Hop

Hi! My name is Davey Fernandez. I am an 8th grader at Ridgeview Middle School. I know it is too late but I would like to share my choice. The earliest written words in Chinese history occured 3000 years ago during the Xizhou dynasty. Many poems were written about the giant panda. The people revered this magnificant creature. They gave it the name, “Zouya”. They adored it, as it would never harm a living creature, including man. It was such a symbol of peace that if two armies met at the battlefield and one of them raised a flag with a depiction of a panda on it, the war would stop then! Thus, in these turbulent times my choice would be “Zooya”! If only such a flag would work today!

Thank you Davey Fernandez

Did anyone notice the 8th grader submiting a name. Aren’t you supposed to be learning instead of on a blog?

By msteven

November 30, 2006 11:10 AM | Link to this

Its a shame that More attention is placed on an animal that clearly Needs no more extra attention and care then she is already receiving yet their are hungry homeless whole families living on the streets and under bridges in Atlanta. ENOUGH ALREADY about this animal. Try Putting as MUCH care Love and ATTENTiON on some unfortunate human beings. And I dont care to hear about feeding the hungry for Thanksgiving and Christmas. What about the other 363 days of the year. Yet you spend 365 and thousands of dollars on an animal. China has enough Pandas to keep the animal from going extinct. This constant fawning over an animal and walking right by homeless humans and children is just plain shameful. I mean I am an animal lover as well, I own four german shepherds, but I dont put them before humans in my care. I mean it appears that folks care more about this panda then a human baby..geeshh. chill out!

A good example. An 8th grader posting. I agree with the other blog..shouldnt that 8th grader nose be in a book instead some blog about an animal? And as for myself. I already have my degree and a good paying job, and currently I am not busy at the moment. so yes I can afford to take time out to blog. I bet that same 8th grader will not even notice the homeless person or other child on the street. We have our priorities out of order.

To those slamming the 8th grader: 1. Believe it or not, we actually HAVE computer time in schools; It’s all part of the technology department. 2. That child posted real information and came up with a name that reflected ancient Chinese history. Perhaps you were offended because a mere child actually taught you something? 3. His name was actually very creative; putting a spin on a Chinese word, that included the English word for her home. 4. To “msteven:” Your posting had grammatical errors. Shame on you. Glad you have that degree and cushy well paying job, ‘cause baby, your written English is sorry. Hope your secretary does all your writing…..And..just HOW can you tell that this 8th grader “doesn’t even notice homeless people or other child on the street?” It’s been MY experience that our children are much more in tune to those suffering around them than self-congratulating jerks driving beemers around town, touting their well paying jobs and degrees. Signed, A teacher (ON MY LUNCH) sick of people blasting kids who are actually contributing something worthwhile.

Ok…Yes, the Panda should have a name. Yes, the 8th grader is above average. Truthfully speaking, since we’re only ‘borrowing’ the Panda who actually BELONGS to China, they should have the right to name the cub. And finally, when did voicing one’s opinion lead to a display of ‘juvenille’ behavior and name calling? Wow. And you people actually want to be TREATED LIKE ADULTS. To the 8th grader, I think you did a great job, you came up with a wonderful, intelligent name for the baby panda. I have never heard about “Zouya” but I think tonight I will look it up. At least you are not on some website that’s going to get you in trouble, like most kids. The people criticizing you are just old, sad, pathetic people who want nothing better than to see other people sad and pathetic like them. Never forget the homeless and less fortunate, but also care about the little things in life too.

everyone does understand that all panda names duplicate themself right? like the momma is lun lun.. the baby panda will have two names of the same word im sure.. so stop being iggnorant and stop ragging on eachother.. aren’t you all grown adults? although being grown doesn’t always make you mature..

i liked the 8th graders idea.. although i have never heard a child say “thus”

I think that if they truly wanted the community and many others to voice their opinon on naming the panda they should not reject certain names such as “Scarlett O’ Beara, or Black-Eyed Pea”. They should have just let the Chinese name it since its theirs. What was the point of this whole thing if in the end the top ten names are Chinese. I think they should name it “Aurora-Lei.”
