Given her Atlanta home, I was excited to see suggestions honoring that, too. Up here in Michigan, our family has been calling her “Peaches” as a nickname. None of us thinks she fits the image implied by the name “Bling Bling.”

Yangtse River? YUK, and when does Lan mean Atlanta. The pronounciation of the mandarin word peach can also be misprounced to mean “annoying” or “trouble” so I think peach is a poor choice in any name.

Not even a token English name? Politically correct Shar-Pei owners must be in fits coming up with new Chinese names for their dogs. Anyone know of a good Germany name for a German Shepard? I’m calling them Bling-Bling in protest. Also, I agree when did lan mean Atlanta? I’m fairly certain that 亚特兰大 is not pronounced as lan.

Eric, the public did have a voice in this. The AJC took suggestions from the blog and the News agencies had a poll in which the public voted. Seeing how some of the blog suggestions were so stupid, at least the News people came up with some realistic names to vote on.

Cheng Ya doesn’t mean Pretty Atlanta Girl from Chengdu. It simply is the first character for Chengdu (the capital of Sichuan province) and Ya the first character of Yatelanda which is the Chinese pronunciation for Atlanta.

That name would be really long since it would read something like “piao liang de chengdu nueren zai yatelanda.” Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

The Pandas are the property of the PRC and it should have a Chinese name.

Mei li is a common girl’s name and I rather not see people names be given to animals and Cheng-Ya means not what they say it means and Mei Lan has similar issues.

I think Ming Xing is a good name, but in the long run, who really cares.

Mei Lan or Mei Tao or Mei Li are all lovely names for a lovely cub and reflect both her Georgian birth and her Chinese heritage. I think it is important to honour the different cultural heritages that make up the American melting pot and the panda cub provides us with a good reminder of all of our immigrant pasts. Perhaps we would all be a little bit more tolerant of each other if we would celebrate our unique differences along with our homogeneity. And the Pandas, btw, are legal immigrants - they have offical governemnt documtation - and the Cub, born on US soil, is American by birth.

Georgia is actually pronounced qiao zhi ya and written as 喬治亞 or if you add the term “zhou” for state, then 喬治亞州.

The full name of Georgia Peach would read as “Qiao zhi ya zhou de tao zi.” Again not something that rolls off the tongue. But Qiao Tao would have been a nice choice.

There is no pinyin for giao in case you were curious.

At least they aren’t playing political games with the names like they tried with the pandas offered to Taiwan.

I wonder if they are actually displaying though. Often if you post Chinese and if the person doesn’t have the language pack installed the Chinese looks like random lines of code. But since KWN posted a line of simplified Chinese, I assume they are displaying correctly.

They display correctly if you have the language pack installed. Just tried it on a machine that didn’t and they appear as little boxes instead of the proper Chinese without the language pack.

Chinese is not all that hard really. Japanese and Korean both are far more difficult for a native English speaker to learn. Of course Chinese isn’t as easy as say Spanish.

Mei lan (美蘭) would really mean beautiful orchid, not Atlanta Beauty. If you wanted to form that word, it would be Mei Ya since I have never seen a contracted Chinese term use the fourth character of a word.

So I’d have no problem with that name if they corrected the awful translation.

I noticed that the AJC had used the term “Shao Tao” as a guide to how the name was spoken. It is also close to how the name would be spelled using Wade-Giles which is how Chinese is Romanized in Taiwan (Hsiao T’ao)so why I asked. The Chinese on this board are Romanized using pinyin which is the system used in the PRC, but oddly, the Chinese characters at the actual Panda exhibit use traditional Chinese characters which are not used on the mainland but are in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The translation for Cheng-Ya is incorrect. As I posted before it is simply the first characters for Chengdu and the Chinese term for Atlanta—Yatelanda.

The other one is Mei Lan. It doesn’t mean Atlanta Beauty—it means Beautiful Orchid.

Also the pronunciation guides on this page are also often incorrect—Jiang is not spoken as Jung, nor is Chang spoken as Chung. Yue is not spoken as yuu.

Looking at the simplified Chinese text provided on voting page for the name, it seems that the Ya in Cheng Ya is not the YA used in the term for Atlanta. But rather 婭 which is usually a term used to describe brother-in-laws, but even if there is a obscure meaning that makes YA mean beautiful girl, the translation they are using is still incorrect.

I think Mei Tao would be a beautiful name for Lun Lun’s baby. I have become quite a panda fan since watching the San Diego and National Z00 cam for more than a year. I am very disappointed that I have not been able to view the Atlanta Zoo’s panda cam for such a long time. CNN needs to get its act together. I have come to love pandas so much that we volunteered for 3 days at the Wolong (China) Panda Reserve in October. What a treat! They have about 15 babies, 18 toddlers, and quite a number of adults. We were able to interact and play with them. Sue

So, I know someone that works at the zoo and we were talking about the names that had been submitted. I had been reading peoples comments before that and had asked about the name Cheng Ya since certain people want to complain about it. The name actual was submitted by a employee that lived most of his life in China near Chengdu. There was more expaination behind the name that does not get print, I was told. Is it the proper translation, no. But taking into account some of the traditions of the area, that is how the name was combined. So, instead of trying to make yourself look good, find the whole story out first.

Yes and unlike some of the others, the translations are correct as are the suggestions on how to correctly say the name.

I voted for Xiao Tao (小桃). If I suggested the name, I think Qiao Tao (喬桃) which would mean Georgia Peach. Mei Mei (美梅) meaning beautiful plum would be good as well. The plum (梅花) being the traditional national flower of China and in spoken form Mei Mei is similar to the word for little sister—although the tones are different.

I did a little bit more research on the word Ya (娅). I learned that not only娅 as in 娅姹means “bright and beautiful”, this word has also been used in many classical Chinese poems describing beautiful ladies. 娅is the same as 丫which means a little girl.

I like the different meanings implied in this name Cheng Ya:

Cheng is derived from Cheng du (where the cub’s parents are from); Cheng originally means success and it is a Chinese surname; Ya is derived from Ya Te Lan Da (Atlanta, the birth place of the cub); Ya means bright and beautiful; Ya is also a little girl.

mei lan (MYLANTA??) sounds like a medicine… LITTLE peach won’t be true for long….. and all the other names are not as beautiful as this precious panda cubcake or easy to say.
