Get ready to name the new panda

Panda fans, start your laptops.

The public will choose the name for Zoo Atlanta’s new Giant Panda cub through an online poll Dec. 1-10 on ajc.com, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution web site.

Voters will choose from 10 names submitted by zoo staff, media organizations, sponsors and residents of Sichuan province in China, the panda’s native homeland.

All 10 potential names for the female cub will be pre-approved for submission by Zoo Atlanta staff and officials at the Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding in China. Chengdu is the birthplace of Lun Lun and Yang Yang, the cub’s parents.

The names will be listed in English with their Chinese translations, Zoo spokeswoman Susan Elliott said. The list of candidates will be announced in late November by zoo officials.

Five local media companies — affiliates of the four major TV networks and The Atlanta-Journal Constitution — will submit one name each. Zoo sponsor Panda Express will also nominate a name. Two names each will be offered by zoo staff and residents of Sichuan province. A contest already is underway in Chengdu to choose those names.

Elliott said the Atlanta media companies were invited to participate because of their ongoing support of the zoo. “They didn’t give us a dime” to be included in the naming process, she said.

The winning name will be announced during a 100 Day Naming Celebration at Zoo Atlanta on Friday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. The celebration is a tradition in many parts of China. For panda cubs the one-hundredth day of life is a significant milestone because of the high infant-mortality rate in the species.

The cub born at Zoo Atlanta on Sept. 6, currently weighing 7.2 pounds, is the only giant panda to be born outside of China in 2006. It is the result of breeding recommendations from a Species Survival Plan for giant pandas administered by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and a breeding plan administered by the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens and the State Forestry Administration of China.

November 14, 2006 01:23 PM | Link to this

There’s no reason why we can’t refer to the panda with a “call name” much as people do with registered animals…

So regardless of the official name, we locals can still call her BlingBling.

I can imagine the marketing folks having a ball with the stuffed animals - cap on sideways, chains around neck, etc etc etc…

By jesirles

Bling Bling cracks me up. It even sounds Chinese. I believe I read in an earlier article that the Chinese custom of giving double names is a term of endearment. Bao Bao means lovely girl. And that is what I shall name her, and she shall be mine. (Sorry, channeled Dory from Finding Nemo there for a second.)

IMO - Bling Bling is stupid. Zoo Atlanta officials are looking for a traditional CHINESE name, so names like “Peaches,” “Virginia” and “Precious” won’t be considered.

I like one poster’s suggestion of Bao Bao (lovely girl) and I also like Tao Tao (peach).

Ken,

Try reading the zoo website…and I quote “As the only city-owned zoo in the U.S. that currently receives no government funding, Zoo Atlanta depends on philanthropic dollars to bridge the gap between earned revenue and the true cost of running the Zoo.” The money going to China for the pandas is from zoo revenue, not your taxpayer dollars.

Girl: Fei Jiao, or Wang Mu Boy: Tao Jie

•FEI: fly/dance in the air •JIAO: beautiful/charming delicate •TAO: Chinese word for peach/ longevity •JIE: excellent/outstanding •Wang Mu : In the Monkey King story “Havoc in Heaven,” Wang Mu Queen (A Chinese goddess, keeper of the peaches of immortality) had a peach banquet for all the gods in the heaven. (The peach represents longevity and peacefulness in the story.) The peaches in her garden took thousands of years to blossom and would prevent people from aging. To this day peaches are given as presents in China to people to wish them Peacefulness.

The baby Panda should be named after a peach because it was born in the ‘Peach State’!!

I think the panda cub should be named either “YA-YA”(亞亞), if it’s male; or “Lan Lan”(蘭蘭) if it’s female. Either of the two words come from Atlanta’s Chinese translation (Ya-Te-Lan-Da). Ya in Chinese can also mean Asia, while Lan in Chinese can mean orchid flower, very suitable for a girl’s name. Another benifit about these two names is that people will always remeber where the panda cub was born- “Ya-Te- Lan-Da”!

Why can’t we be involved in the naming process?
Okay, okay, I was so excited about the naming of the baby panda cub that I got excited and wanted my class to be able to be involved in the naming. Okay, okay, I goofed, but I admit it. I pulled in the principal to listen to the names.

Okay, okay, I did not actually fully read the article as I was cutting out other read articles for a current events board.

Okay, okay, make fun of me if you wish, but do not make fun of my students or my principal. They are not to be blamed for my lack of fully reading.

Anyway, why not look up the name of our Panda cub and see what it really means? Linda Burke

Mei-Mei in Chinese means little sister.

In China they take quite a bit of time and put much consideration into choosing a name. It is chosen because of its meaning. One of my daughters, whom I’ve adopted from China, was named “Qiu Xia” (Autumn rosy clouds)because she was found abandoned, as a newborn, in the Autumn and the sky was a beautiful rosy color. My other daughter was named “Fei Zhen” (sharp needle point) because when she was found, as a toddler, she was already strong willed and a great problem solver.

SO…..the panda baby’s name will need to have great meaning for it to be chosen by the chinese.

Is this for real? How many people have attempted to name the ugly fuball? Are you incompentant to read the rules and original news article previously posted and published in AJC? Please read for once, this is quite ridiuculous. All of you are incapable of reading.

To Random Student

Spelling is not your best subject is it? You would think that if you are going to condemn others publicly, you would learn to spell first (or at least learn to use a dictionary.) Which is worse, having fun or not being able to spell simple words like ridiculous or incompetent? Stick to 5 cent words, not 25 cent ones in the future. Random is right - student? Must be in the last 10% of your standardized tests. Go back to remedial spelling.

HAHA BigDawg, my thoughts exactly!

Here’s what the above article really says, but folks we’re just having fun here. No matter what - that panda will never be named by the public. We all know that, but what’s wrong with some laughter and sunshine on such a dreary rainy day? (Anyone build an Ark?)

**The public will choose the name for Zoo Atlanta’s new Giant Panda cub through an online poll Dec.

A contest already is underway in Chengdu to choose those names.**

Keep those great names coming and the rest of you, go back to reading the comic section.

I think taking an”L” from Mom (Lun-Lun) and the “ng” from Dad (Yang-Yang) and an “i” just for baby panda herself would create the name Ling-Ling. I got the Chinese teacher at North Hall High School to interpret the meaning of this name and he said it is feminine (luckily) and has connotations of beauty and intelligence. My fourth period Environmental Science class wishes to submit this name.

Bindi should be the panda’s name, in honor of Bindi Irwin, the daughter of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. (Had the panda been a boy, I would have suggested the name Irwin.) Besides, bindi means dot, and pandas are dotted! Ironically, Steve Irwin died shortly before the panda was born. Naming the the panda Bindi would be a great way to honor the memory of Steve and his passion for conservation.
