WHERE CAN I FIND IT?

Q: Years ago I made a Jell-O cake using two layers of sponge cake. The sponge cake came in a package of two 9-inch round layers in paper trays. We made a wonderful summer cake by pouring Jell-O onto the layers and putting them in the refrigerator till firm, then topping them with whipped cream and strawberries. My children loved it and now my grandchildren are asking me to make it. I’ve looked everywhere and checked online but had no luck. I don’t know if the company makes such a product anymore. Could you please help me find it? I would love to make it again for my grandchildren.

FRAN CRAMER, Roswell

A: Fran, since I don’t know the brand name of the cake layers you used, I had to wing it. But, the good news is that I found prebaked cake layers that look as if they would work for your gelatin concoction. You’ll have to consider a little road trip, however. Vincinni is a baking company that turns out a variety of filled and plain cakes, including soft round layers that come three to a pack. Each package weighs 14 ounces, and the layers are about 12 inches in diameter and about a half-inch thick. You can select from vanilla or chocolate flavors. The cakes are available for $3.99 each at the Buford Highway Farmers Market, 5600 Buford Highway, Doraville, 770-455-0770.

Q: I have not been able to find Extra cinnamon gum anywhere in town. As a matter of fact, I’ve looked in other cities I’ve traveled to and can’t find it there either. I have also looked for Dentyne cinnamon, to no avail. Do you know what’s happened to my favorite gum?

GLORIA JACOBSON, Decatur

A: Gloria, while I didn’t find Extra cinnamon gum locally, it is available from various Web sites, including www.amazon.com and www.thecandylandstore.com. However, I did find Dentyne classic cinnamon gum, but not where you might expect. You can pick up packs of 20 pieces of gum for $1.09 at Smith Ace Hardware, 601 E. College Ave., Decatur, 404-373-3335. In fact, this store carries a handful of hard-to-find vintage candies.

Q: When I lived in Michigan years ago, I went to a restaurant called Win Schuler’s where they served a cheese spread and crackers while you were waiting for dinner. Until about a year ago, I could find Win Schuler’s cheese spread at Kroger. They have stopped carrying it. I can order it online but was hoping to find it locally. Can you help?

SUZANNE SCHOTT, e-mail

A: Considering that the restaurant also offered diners complimentary meatballs and barbecue sauce along with what was then called Bar-Scheeze, I can see why it was a popular place. Now known as Win Schuler’s original cheese spread, it’s still stocked at select Kroger stores. You’ll find 8-ounce crocks of the sharp cheddar cheese spread for $3.99 at Kroger, 2875 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, 404-294-5311.
