Mounties. Maple leafs. Molson. Americans are famous for reducing other countries to a handful of stereotypes, even those with whom we share a 3,987-mile border. But for Canada Day, we really ought to make a little more effort, eh?
The Atlanta Canadians Club will welcome even the most hockey-impaired partiers to its third annual Canada Day Celebration, 3 p.m. till closing today at Meehan's Ale House in Sandy Springs. (Canada Day, also known as Dominion Day and Canada's birthday, is actually July 1, but they move it to a weekend when necessary for party purposes.) There will be hockey in the street, Molson beer on tap and plenty of poutine, which is, of course, french fries topped with cheese curds topped with gravy.
Non-Canadians are welcome and will be in abundance, says club founder Marty Seed. But don't be a hoser: Bone up on these Canada facts so you'll know what you're talking aboot.
> Canadians living in Georgia: about 14,000, with the vast majority in metro Atlanta, according to the Canadian consul general's office.
> Some famous Canadians living here: Colby Armstrong, Brad Larsen, Todd White, Brad McCrimmon —- all are Atlanta Thrashers. Tom Lysiak and Eric Vail —- both are former Atlanta Flames.
> Some famous Canadians not living here: Jim Carrey, Sandra Oh, Margaret Atwood, Shania Twain, Morley Safer, Keanu Reeves.
> Trade between Canada and Georgia: $10 billion a year. Delta Air Lines is buying 30 Bombardier CRJ900 jets from Canada; Georgia sold more goods to Canada than to China, Mexico and the U.K. combined.
> Canadians feel at home in Atlanta because of all the amateur hockey leagues, Seed says. They feel undone by the heat and the traffic. So they're no different from natives on that point.
> Bobby Cox was once manager of the Toronto Blue Jays.
> Zed: the letter after Y.
