It's time to reward Mom for all she does throughout the year. The Style staff found a few fashionable options to help brighten her special day —- many are made by Atlanta businesswomen.
Yerba mate tea is not just for drinking anymore. Kiehl's introduces a skin-care line that's packed with the South American botanical. Yerba mate is also known to boost immunity and provide antioxidant protection —- perfect for pampering Mom. Kombucha tea, lemon fruit extract and honey round out the key ingredients. The cleanser, toner and lotion are suitable for all skin types, and the products (right) range from $20.50 to $35 at Kiehl's stores.
In today's casual world, T-shirts are ubiquitous. But Atlanta mother and artist Britt Menzies has managed to come up with a new look via StinkyKids. And no, it has nothing to do with body odor. Inspired by the age-old expression, "you little stinker!" her whimsical designs of boys and girls on cotton shirts illustrate the innocence of childhood. They range from $24 to $44 (right) and are available for infants and toddlers as well as moms. Buy them on the Web site, www.stinkykids.com, where you can also find a list of Atlanta retailers. And, true to the company's motto —- "Always be a leader of good" —- Menzies donates 10 percent from each sale of StinkyKids merchandise to Books, Bears & Bonnets. This nonprofit organization provides gift boxes to kids and adults fighting cancer and other serious illnesses.
Mothers are constantly offering pearls of wisdom to their offspring. Now the tables have turned. Just in time for Mother's Day, glass artist and jewelry designer Carter Seibels adorns her colorful "Words of Wisdom" pendants with a thought, saying or quote. "They offer a unique way to share a favorite saying or message with your mother," said Seibels of Divali Glass Jewelry.
Each numbered necklace is $112 (below). Quotes include: "Stop a moment, cease your work and look around you," "Life isn't a matter of milestones, but of moments," and "Hitch your wagon to a star." Or you can customize a pendant with 12 words or less at no extra charge. Buy Seibel's jewelry at Mathilda's Enchanted Cottage in Alpharetta, 770-754-7831, or at www.divaliglassjewelry.com.
Celebrate Mother's Day —- and healthy babies —- with one cool bag. Through May, Coach will donate 20 percent of online proceeds from its $348 (right) Scribble baby bag to Healthy Child Healthy World. The nonprofit organization educates parents on how to create healthy home environments for their children. One suggestion from the organization: Reduce the amount of toxic pesticides in your kids' bodies by choosing certified organic foods and beverages whenever possible. The Coach Healthy Child bag boasts suede and leather trim and is equipped with a matching diaper changing pad. Even if you don't have a little one, this makes a great shopping tote. Buy it at Coach stores and www.coach.com.
In 2002, mother-daughter duo Avril Joffe and Cindy Hyman joined forces to create unique, handcrafted jewelry using diamonds, semiprecious gemstones, antiqued sterling silver and other materials. Both left 9-to-5 lives behind to launch the Avindy Collection, which soon appeared in Saks Fifth Avenue and Barney's Japan and even on Britney Spears. The Midtown-based company now places its designs in more than 300 stores worldwide, including Mooncake, Veronica's Attic, Squash Blossom, Sandpiper and B.D. Jeffries in Atlanta. With items priced $30 to more than $300, there's sure to be something for the special mom on your list.
Inspiration from Grandma led Atlantan Ashley Leckey to launch a company with the special lady in her life. Leckey and her grandmother, Cecile Marcoux, are the founders of IceMilk Aprons —- designer aprons that combine the ladies' love for cooking and fashion. These aprons are perfect for those hoping to reconnect with the past or start their own tradition. Available at prices ranging from $27 to $36, the line can be found at Belly General Store, Taste in Decatur, online at www.icemilkaprons.com or call 770-722-2936.
