Back in the late 1980s, Deonda Sisco was a 19-year-old Longhorn Steakhouse waitress and aspiring model who went to an open casting call and landed a spot in Playboy magazine's 35th anniversary issue.

She is one of several women with Georgia ties getting undressed for the magazine, including this month's cover of Rossville native and tennis pro Ashley Harkleroad. Others include Mensa braniacs, SEC hotties, and at least one former Falcon cheerleader as well as celebs Kim Basinger and Jane Fonda.

"[I] needed it, and this is a pun on itself, the exposure," Kim Basinger told a reporter in 1988.

Harkleroad, 23, wears a bunny crown as Playboy's August covergirl. Inside the magazine, she's photographed, tennis racket in hand, standing in provocative Marilyn Monroe-breeze-moment, and ut-oh, there goes her skirt.

"I'm just a normal girl," Harkleroad says in the magazine. "Other girls on the tour have arms like tree trunks. But I'm just me."

For Sisco, posing nude drew a wave of attention — some good, leading to lingerie modeling gigs. But it also sparked far less desirable attention.

Still, Sisco, now a 38-year-old mom who lives in Atlanta, has no regrets.

"It was a very positive experience," said Sisco who was living in Alpharetta back in 1989. "They were so professional and Playboy is famous for treating women well and I can say I was treated very well."

After appearing in the January 1989 issue, she moved twice because her phone rang off the hook and also quit her then-waitressing job because so many fans dropped in.

"I didn't use a fake name, and while most people were very nice, I did have some crazies bugging and harassing me," said Sisco, who asked her married name not be published. Sisco's life eventually returned to normal. She got married and started a family. She still waitresses part-time.
