Swanagan, the Georgia Aquarium's executive director and president, has been named executive director of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Mike Leven, vice chairman of the Marcus Foundation and a member of the Georgia Aquarium Board of Directors, has been named acting Chief Executive Officer, aquarium officials announced late Tuesday.

Swanagan, who was hired to create the Georgia Aquarium in 2002, started his career at the Columbus Zoo in 1981 as a zookeeper and was the facility's education director from 1982 to 1987.

"Jeff Swanagan joined the Georgia Aquarium when it was still just a dream," Marcus said in a statement. "He was not only involved with its planning from the very beginning, he helped create its structure and brought aboard qualified people to lead it."

"I've watched him grow over the past six years, and I am very proud that he has been chosen to lead a major facility," Marcus added.

Timely for a departure. I agree that the aquarium can be educational, but with the deaths of the whales, dolphins arriving, and people being allowed to share tanks with them, it's going to get worse. Yes, there should be a limit on the number of people allowed to tour the aquarium at any given time. It's totally ridiculous as it is now. Seems money is more important than the educational experience being touted. BTW, this backwater state contains Atlanta, which is made up of anything but Georgians and Southerners, in general.

Your personal comittment and contribution has been experienced by the millions and the millions yet to come and experience this truly amazing environment...your leadership, vision, and bold foresight has brought the City of Atlanta to yet a new level of tourism and releated revenues; certainly at a time when badly needed. We will miss you Jeff, but there's nothing like going back home in a roll and opportunity that will alow you to create yet another legacy, this time for those whow raised, educated and love you!
Very best wishes and THANK YOU from a fellow Buckeye!

Good riddance! Take the Georgia Aquarium with you! It is an embarassment to the state of Georgia.

There have obviously been quite a few deleted comments. I plan to ignore those. I also plan to ignore the comments of the whacko's that would wish to "set all the fish free". Should I flush my living room aquarium's occupants down the toilet? I have some fish that have been alive over twelve years. Their life expectancy in the wild would be 7 years-(it seems I have done them a favor).

The Ga Aquarium is an EDUCATIONAL, RECREATIONAL "theme park". It fulfills this mission in a manner that is the envy of the world.

I was saddened by Ralph's death as well as Gaspar's-yet I know that our people in place will learn from those deaths. Do you people think that Whale sharks and Beluga's don't die in the wild of unnatural causes?

Thank you, Jeff. Thank you for your work, your time, your energy, your passion and your sacrifices. Good luck in your new time as you "go back home". You BUILT something here that the world will talk about for a long time to come. You helped lay the "first stone" of this Georgia pyramid. Be proud of your time here. It is appreciated.

Good Luck in your future sir. God Bless you and your family. Thank you for the legacy that you have left me and my family.

I would like to comment on the crazy woman from the MARTA train and the other ghetto trash on MARTA who act just like her.

Ever consider that he may want to go to Columbus because that's where he is from? The snotty comments in this thread demonstrate what a nasty place Georgia has become. The question shouldn't be why is he moving home but rather how quickly will other professionals flee this redneck backwater of a state.

Apparently he started his career in Columbus. Now that he's made it big you can't blame a guy for heading home!

Maybe the new director will learn something about crowd control.

I mean,really... there is a limit to the amount of people you should allow in the place at once. Went the other day and there must have been 12 different schools there on field trips.

By leaving for a reason?

HMMMM........

Leaving Atlanta for a lesser city? Leaving the Ga Aquarium for a lesser zoo/aquarium? Most likely getting lesser pay?

He is leaving before __________ (what) gets out???

Or just embarrassed about the deaths & the dolphin deaths about to come?? All in his name.

Have fun!
