For the bookworm Mom

So Mom's taking her beach read camping, too, but she's missing her bedside lamp. About 5 inches tall when in use, this lantern can illuminate an outdoor campsite or a tent's interior. It throws the bold, white brightness of a two-watt LED bulb, but its technology only requires the power typically needed for a one-watt bulb. This means the four AA batteries included should last longer. It has high, low and strobe settings. Its regulated circuit feature means the lamp will have a consistent glow even when the batteries are starting to fade. The lantern collapses to 3 inches for packing. Order online, or to get free shipping, call an Atlanta REI store and request an order. REI will call you when it arrives, and you can pick it up at the store. When ordering for pickup, use item number 768619.

For the whole family

Jeep Family Dome

Price: $189.99

Available at: Wal-Mart locations beginning this month

Jeep, the purveyors of four-wheel-drive vehicles, is all about adventure. And camping falls under that, um, tent. This tri-toned, portable structure (more than 100 square feet) sleeps five people. But that's not saying one or two additional pint-size campers can't be squeezed in for good measure. Awnings help keep rain from coming through the windows. Corner vents circulate fresh air, a key factor. Other features include a mud mat, which assists in keeping a clean tent floor, and closet areas for storage.

For the grandparents

In-Out Blanket in a Bag

Price: $19.99

Available at: Brookstone locations and www.brookstone.com

Packing a blanket for a journey can be awkward. Brookstone has a remedy with this cushy blanket. It starts as a tote, with electric green handles. Unzipped and unfolded, it transforms into a 63-by-76-inch blanket big enough for two cuddling campers. When breaking camp the next morning, you can easily fold it back into a bag. Online customers give it high marks, with many noting its versatility on airplanes and during road trips. Go to a Brookstone store and you can score the bag for $10 with any purchase.

For mental stimulation

Express Games by Hasbro

Price: $14.99

Available at: Most major toy retailers or www.hasbrotoyshop.com.

Consider going old school and unplugged with fireside board game entertainment. Hasbro's Express Games takes classics like Monopoly, Sorry and Scrabble and turns them into portable games that can be played in 20 minutes or less. Each includes game pieces, game board and instructions for speedy play. And it all packs up in a plastic storage case. A pair of new Express Games (Battleship and Clue) join the line this fall. Two to four players can compete. Hasbro recommends the games for those age 8 and older.

For dad

Mini Egg

Price: $249.95

Available at: Big Green Egg, 3417 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker. 770-934-5300.

Many grilling and food-smoking aficionados rave about the Big Green Egg, a ceramic grill based on an ages-old Asian design. Used correctly, it results in juicy, smoky meats and veggies. Yes, Big Green Eggs are pricey. But they have a lifetime warranty. And the company's international headquarters is in Tucker, so shoppers can go straight to the factory store. The smallest version weighs just 30 pounds. It gets very hot when cooking, so an overnight break allows the egg to cool down before hauling it home. The cooking area is 9 inches in diameter, so larger meals have to come in courses.

For the accident-prone cousin

American Red Cross AM/FM Shortwave Emergency Radio by Etón

Price: $59.95

Available at: The Sharper Image locations and www.sharperimage.com.

Accidents happen, and this radio might come in handy. It takes three AA batteries, but can also operate by using either the rechargeable internal battery pack, the AC adapter (included) or the hand-cranked generator. It can charge cellphones, too. Mail the enclosed card to the manufacturer for a free cellphone adapter tip. The radio can pick up AM and FM stations and eight shortwave bands. Its flashing red light and booming siren can be used in rescue situations. And if that clumsy cousin spills his or her drink on it, don't sweat. It's water-resistant.
