It’s finally time to plant warm-season vegetables

Week 1

Spot spray broadleaf weeds like henbit, bittercress and chickweed. Do not let the plants scatter seed.

Fertilize fescue for the last time this season. Use iron-containing products to green it up in summer.

Week 2

Plant perennials such as salvia, bee balm, hosta and daylily for long-lasting summer color. Mix extended- release fertilizer into the planting hole.

Drain gas and oil from your mower and replace with fresh to get the lawn maintenance season off to a good start.

Week 3

Soil temperaturesm are finally warm enough to plant canna, caladium and dahlia this week.

Mow zoysia grass at 1-1/2 inches to expose it to sunshine. Fertilize when it is 90 percent green.

Week 4

Plant warm-season vegetables such as squash, okra, watermelon and beans from seed this week.

Prune forsythia, quince, star magnolia and kerria once they have finished blooming.
