You can whiz down Howell Mill Road and be beyond the Savvy Snoot before you know it. The eclectic home shop is tucked away from the street, behind a row of more prominent facades on the city’s west side. But follow the parking lot around to the rear of 1187 Howell Mill, and you’ll find a treasure trove of goodies.
Not having a splashy street presence hasn’t kept buyers from discovering the shop that opened five years ago. It’s been such a success that owner Marty Mason recently expanded and opened a second Snoot on Main Street in Alpharetta.

Savvy Snoot on Howell Mill road has artwork, many by local painters, lamps and one-of-a-kind items, some of which are on consignment.
About half the store’s wares are on consignment. “We look for the most unusual or interesting style,” said Rob Gini, who manages the Atlanta store. “We have vintage mixed with a lot of traditional and modern.”
What you’ll find
On a recent visit to the Howell Mill store, a new footstool and oversized pillow in a downy white terry cloth had just arrived by the front door. Inside, there’s so much to show off that the owners use the dining tables, buffets and chests as bases for chairs, smaller tables and lamps. Oversized artworks are suspended from the ceiling. It’s crowded and cramped in some corners — a bargain hunter’s paradise.
Tables run the gamut from the traditional carved wood dining sets to glass- or marble-topped coffee tables. Antique gold-gilt mirrors share wall space with wood-framed ones from the 1940s. Seating runs the gamut from leather loungers and sofas to sectionals. A far wall supports a wood fireplace mantel and a headboard; a nearby table sports an array of carved wooden fruit. Armoires, pillows, clocks, breakfronts and plenty of dining chairs fill the floor space and more hang from the rafters.
The store carries its own line of scented, three-wick candles in square glass jars that retail for $25. Works by about 10 local artists also are on display.
Furniture prices range from $400 to $3,500.
Best-sellers
Savvy buyers are big on lighting. The store has a varied collection of table and hanging lamps, from lantern-style metal dining lamps to delicate pendant lamps with colored glass globes. Chairs and tables are always hot — especially any sort of table, credenza or chest that can hold a flat-screen TV, said Gini.
Trends
“More of our buyers are looking for Mid-century Modern,” said Gini. “Any clean, rustic piece is also very popular right now.”
Savvy Snoot customers are also fans of the consignment aspect. “They like that we’re recycling furniture — it’s a green aspect of what we do,” said Gini.
