When it comes to allotting the decorating dollar, there's one thing many buyers put their money on first: a bed.

Having a place to put your head at the end of the day is a prime concern of just about anyone who wants to furnish a living space.

At the Bed Down store in Midtown, buyers won't find the actual mattresses — the company got out of that segment of the business a few years ago.

But they will find plenty of options for arranging those mattresses tastefully and comfortably.

What you'll find

Plenty of platform beds and headboards fill the showroom at Bed Down. Coordinating dressers and nightstands are also on display. The bed selection starts at $499 and climbs to $4,000, depending on the options. A combination leather and wood bed is $999; canopy beds start at $899.

The store has expanded beyond beds. Dining room tables, buffets and chairs are plentiful. Accessories such as pottery, art and throw pillows are available. And there's a small but exquisite collection of fine Italian linens, made of high-quality Egyptian cotton or silk. Select from sheets and duvet covers or goose feathered pillows, comforters and baffle-box featherbeds.

Most of the items on display are in stock, but buyers may also custom-order fabrics and colors to suit their style.

Best sellers

One of the main attractions is Environment Furniture, an eco-friendly line made from reclaimed wood from Brazil.

"Some of this wood is 60 to 100 years old," said co-owner Gary Brown. "It's taken from torn-down, abandoned structures and barns. It's really durable and because it's almost petrified, it's very hard."

The Peroba collection has bed frames, dressers, chests, nightstands, dining tables and chairs. Prices range from $400 for an end table to $3,000 for some of the beds.

Trends

The latest look in beds is the upholstered headboard. Bed Down buyers can select the fabric, trim and nail heads for the style they prefer. Upholstery is also making a comeback in sofas and chairs.

In the area

Bed Down is part of the Amsterdam Avenue shopping district, complete with spots to grab lunch or a cup of coffee while wandering through the clothing, shoe and home decor stores.
