Those fluent in Indonesian will know Gado Gado, the name of two home stores in Midtown and Decatur, means "mix." Owners Jill and Setiawan Onggo picked the title that represents their product selection from around the islands in southeast Asia, as well as their own relationship.

"We are a mixed couple," said Jill Onggo with a laugh. "We met on a plane. He's from Indonesia and we lived there for a few years before moving to Atlanta, so we have great sources."

What you'll find

Gado Gado's showrooms are stocked with imported, hand-crafted solid wood furniture pieces as well as home accents made by native artisans. Carvings, masks, pillows, hand-woven pieces that work as wall hangings, sofa throws and table runners are a few of the textiles in stock. Prices for decor items range from $10 to $400.

"We go for anything that's handmade and unique in Indonesia," said Jill Onggo. "It's an area so rich with artists and craftspeople that we can keep going back and back and don't need to search elsewhere for items."

Best-sellers

The bulk of Gado Gado's business is the solid wood furniture. "A small percentage is original and antique, and some pieces are made from reclaimed wood," said Jill Onggo. "It's a mix of different things that aren't necessarily all Asian in design. Someone with an Arts and Crafts home will find things to work in their space here, too."

Dining, side and coffee tables abound, as do buffets, small cabinets, dining chairs, benches and chairs. The most popular woods are teak, mahogany, Indonesian rosewood and mango. Furniture pieces are finished with a shellac in either a natural or dark stain. Prices start at about $150 for a small table to more than $4,000. Each piece is complete; no assembly required.

Trends

You won't find brand-name lines here, but you may pick up the one-of-a-kind table or accent piece that will perk up your home.

"The general trend has been toward making an eclectic living space," said Jill Onggo. "Buyers aren't looking for matching sets of end tables, coffee table and sofa. They're looking for a unique piece to add to their living or dining room to create their own space. These unusual pieces add a new element with a lot of spirit and soul."

In the areas

Gado Gado's Midtown store is part of the Amsterdam Walk shopping district, with stores and food outlets. The new location in Decatur is part of the downtown district, where shoppers will find a mix of stores and restaurants.
