Daffodil Villa is a home true to its color.

Every inch of the meticulously designed 6,000 square-foot Roswell estate is painted in vibrant shades of yellow. It stands out among its builder-beige neighbors like a dollop of butter in a bowl of oatmeal.

Wrought-iron gates prevent curious passers-by from getting a close look at the sunshine yellow and white exterior. But Atlantans can peek inside tonight when the villa is showcased on "Living With Soul," a new home decor program on cable TV One. The black-owned lifestyle and entertainment channel is available to Comcast and DirecTV subscribers.

The program, launched in December, features homes owned by African-Americans throughout the country.

Riding the wave of popularity created by HGTV, a number of programs and magazines have emerged to focus on African-American homes and lifestyles.

Homes of Color magazine debuted in Maryland in 2001 spotlighting black architectural design, home construction, furnishings, interior design and art. Living Space magazine, begun in Atlanta in 2003, features similar articles. Last spring, Oprah launched O at Home, a home decor publication that, while not aimed at blacks, attracts a large black readership. And in December, the Discovery Channel kicked off a new series with home decor and entertainment expert Barbara Smith.

But viewers of all races can pick up tips on how to incorporate color and Afrocentric decor in their living spaces in "Living With Soul."

"My desire is to give people inspiration on creative ways to make their house their personal home, whether that's with African American art, African American collectibles or just ancestral pictures," says Phyllis Bowie, the San Francisco-based host. "No matter what your income, you can have a home that is beautiful and tranquil."

Although featured homes have a designer look, houses are selected only if the homeowners have done some of the work themselves.

Daffodil Villa owners Regina Lynch-Hudson and Courtland Bivens III easily fit into that category.

The couple did the bulk of the renovations on the European-styled home, spending almost all their free time and more than $250,000 on exterior landscaping, interior details and more than 50 gallons of high-gloss paint in shades of mustard, lemon, banana, canary and pastel yellow.

"Every home I've ever lived in, I pretty much gut it out and renovate it," says Lynch-Hudson, a publicist.

"I can dream up something in my head, and my husband can do it," she adds, referring to the ornate molding, recessed lighting and amenities that Bivens, an aerospace engineer, built to accentuate the home's Corinthian columns, oversize windows, marble and travertine floors and three-level spiral staircase.

Last week, Tamarra Turner's Lithia Springs home was highlighted on "Living With Soul." She describes her decor as feng shui with an exotic, African-Moroccan twist, all done on a budget.

"I got 22 emails after the show saying 'you inspired me to use color and feng shui,' " Turner notes.

"Living With Soul" airs at 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays with reruns throughout the week.

"So far, the response has been wonderful," says Amy Wheeler, a producer with Park Hill Entertainment, the program's production company. "We're already thinking ahead for next season."
