DiGiorno's focaccia pie is chewy and bland

DiGiorno is pumping up its frozen pizzas, adding a thick-crust variety that adds a lot more heft to a slice. We tried Ultimate Focaccia in Four Cheese With Basil, a pie that weighs nearly 2 pounds and promises to serve six. Unlike a traditional focaccia, which is a thick bread that may be topped lightly with onions, herbs or even a dusting of cheese, these are more like pizzas, with a thick layer of cheese and red sauce. The crust is soft, chewy and bland, even with a sun-dried tomato and basil seasoning.

We prefer DiGiorno's thin crust or rising crust pizzas, where the ingredients carry the show and the crust is just a supporting player. Another downside to the focaccia: Each slice of the cheese variety contains 1.5 grams of trans fats, a dietary disaster that many food manufacturers have moved away from. That's nearly as many trans fats in one slice as a person should eat in two days — and most people will probably split the pizza four ways, rather than six, meaning they'll take in even more. The pizza is $6.99 at Publix.

Ice cream sauce a special surprise
Smucker's Special Recipe Triple Berry Topping is a pleasant surprise, a processed ice cream topping that tastes as good as something cooked in a home kitchen after a day of berrying. It's made with the ingredients you would use at home, too: Sugar and berries. The berries are mostly strawberries, with some raspberries and blackberries. Try it on a scoop of vanilla for a simple dessert, or set it out with sundae toppings for a Memorial Day cookout. Suggested retail is $2.79 to $2.99 for an 18-ounce jar. At Publix now; at Kroger and Wal-Mart in June.

Bobby Flay bowls good, cow skewers just dumb
Food Network's deal with Kohl's turns out yet another line of cookware and entertaining products this month. The Bobby Flay collection includes dishes, grilling supplies, utensils, cutlery and a blender — you name it, it's got BF's initials on it. Many items are in Southwestern shades of turquoise, avocado, orange and brown. We liked the party bowls, a set of three brightly colored dishes that fit into a rectangular ceramic tray for serving, for $34.98. They're oven safe to 390 degrees, as well as OK for the microwave. Thumbs down on the gimmicky kebab skewers, decorated with metal cattle heads, chickens or shrimp. Who wants to look at a glowering steer before chowing down on beef tips?
