Chairs, dishes, linens — stock changes weekly at TJ Maxx
For the Journal-Consitution
Sunday, August 24, 2008
Pass up the racks of the shirts, slacks and outerwear and head to the back of the nearest TJ Maxx store for deals on home-decor items. Most of the Georgia TJ Maxx shops feature a section of home goods that could include club chairs, outdoor tables, silk plants and more, depending on the day.
“Our stores get 10,000 new pieces of merchandise every week — a little bit of fashion, home, shoes,” said Boston-based TJ Maxx spokeswoman Sonya Cosentini. “We have thousands of buyers working around the world who are looking for amazing deals. We don’t buy like department stores — for the four seasons. Our buyers scoop up great deals every day.”

TJ Maxx in Buckhead features an assortment of framed art and furniture. Decorators say a vase of natural materials can update a look.

What you’ll find
Generally, the stores have a selection of bed linens, comforters, bath and kitchen accessories, decorative pillows, vases, mirrors, framed art, mirrors, candles, area rugs and candles. Some may feature furniture such as end tables, armchairs, outdoor tables and barstools; others may carry gourmet food items. There may be an assortment of Italian ceramics on one day, fabrics from India on another.
“We constantly have new merchandise in the store so you’ll always find something different,” said Cosentini.
The prices are as varied as the selection, said Cosentini. “Typically, everything is 20 to 50 percent less than what you’d pay elsewhere. We have mugs for $2.99 and comforters for $99. And these are by the same designers you’ll see in a specialty or department store.”
A recent visit to the Howell Mill TJ Maxx uncovered a sale table of silk and dried floral arrangements priced below $10. The store was also well stocked with colorful area rugs, linens, cushions, casual furniture, framed art and kitchenware.
Trends
TJ Maxx buyers are tapping into three trends that shoppers are embracing:
• Eco-friendly, nature-inspired decor: Look for bamboo in everything from kitchen serving pieces (bowls and utensils) to place mats; botanical and floral prints on bedding to bring nature into the bedroom; and floral artwork throughout the home.
• Contemporary looks in deep, romantic fall colors such as platinum gray, chocolate and plum for the bedroom. Also, check out the attention to stitching details and pleating accents on comforters, decorative pillows and throws that can quickly update a bedroom.
• Baths going glam: Towels in spice tones (browns, greens, oranges) and geometric prints are big. Accessories such as toothbrush holders, soap dishes or dispensers in stone, marble or ceramics are big.
