If you'd like to add more fish to your diet, Atlanta has several places that make it easy and convenient to buy a wide variety of fresh fish and seafood. Fresh fish is likely to taste better, and you can often get extra services such as having your fish cleaned and filleted while you wait.

Fish provides many health-related benefits, since it's high in nutrients such as healthy omega-3 fats, vitamin D, selenium and protein, and provides a low amount of saturated fat.

When you buy locally, you can pick up some useful preparation tips from vendors. Fish can be a little intimidating to prepare, but it's actually quick and easy to fix at home.

Here are four places to buy fresh fish and seafood in Atlanta:

Buford Highway Farmers Market

5600 Buford Highway NE, Atlanta. 770-455-0770. aofwc.com.

The variety of seafood available reflects the ethnic diversity represented throughout the market. Choose from over 100 varieties of seafood, including salmon, octopus, snapper, sushi, lobster, blue crab and Dungeness crab. You can also pick from at least 10 types that are live in tanks, including mackerel, tuna, clams, oysters, sea bass and trout.

Individual portions are offered for some selections, but most fish are sold whole and then cut to your specifications. You'll be given a beeper so you can browse through the rest of the market and be alerted when your fish is ready.
