One killed in wreck on I-20

Georgia State Patrol Lt. Paul Cosper said the single-vehicle wreck happened shortly after 4 a.m. on I-20 between Lee Road and Ga. 92.

A westbound Ford Explorer left the roadway, struck the median guard rail and overturned several times, Cosper said.

The driver, Larry Anthony Couch, 47, of Douglasville was killed.

A passenger in the Explorer was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. That person’s name and condition were not immediately available.

According to the State Patrol, the Douglas County wreck was one of three fatal crashes since the Fourth of July holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. Thursday. Other fatalities were reported by Athens-Clarke County Police and Floyd County Police.

The State Patrol predicted a death toll of 22 on Georgia roads over the holiday weekend. The Fourth of July statistically is the second deadliest holiday of the year in terms of traffic fatalities, behind New Year’s Day.

Through noon Friday, 134 people had been injured in 430 crashes across the state.
