CLARIFICATION

> The report of a special DeKalb County grand jury, the subject of a front page story March 28, does not state that county police officer Dennis Stepnowski violated county policy in the foot pursuit which led to his death in 2006. Stepnowski was killed by a suspect who waited for him in ambush after disappearing around a corner. The report said that the pursuit of the suspect around a corner after Stepnowski and another officer lost sight of him was "risky." The report quoted testimony by the department's top training official that rounding a corner in pursuit of an unseen suspect is contrary to recommended practice and training. The department also has a written policy instructing officers not to round a corner in such a situation because of the danger the suspect may wait for them in ambush.
