Runners in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race need not fret scorching or soggy skies Saturday.

The National Weather Service reports no rain in the forecast for July 4 and cooler temperatures than we’ve seen in recent weeks.

“We’re expecting the low temperature to be 65 degrees around 7 a.m.,” forecaster Laura Griffith said. “The high temperature we’re expecting for tomorrow is going to be 90 degrees. But by about 10 and 11 [a.m.], it will be just under or at 80 degrees.”

More than 55,000 runners are expected for the 40th anniversary race. The finish line this year returns to Piedmont Park, its historic location. Because of the drought, last year’s race finished outside the park.

Wheelchair racers start at 7 a.m. The elite runners start at 7:30, with the rest of the field starting at staggered times.

Those hoping to watch fireworks shows later in the evening can look forward to clear skies and that same 80-degree temperature around 9 p.m., Griffith said.

Earlier forecasts showed isolated showers for Saturday, but predictions place any precipitation on Sunday, well after the holiday festivities.
