Celeste McConkey works with recovering addicts every day. As the only nurse at the Metro Atlanta Recovery Residences in Lawrenceville, she sees about 25 women a day, helping each of them focus on her recovery and health.

"The medical needs of recovering addicts are many," said co-worker Karen Shoran, who nominated McConkey for the award. "Celeste approaches each patient fully committed, refusing to give anything less than high-quality health care for these women who have never had access in the past."

McConkey's work schedule is Monday to Friday, but it's not unusual for her to come in on weekends to help with drug screenings or for her to stop by the facility's townhomes at night to deal with a client's elevated blood pressure.

"For me, it's all part of what I do," McConkey said. "I don't think of it as anything unusual."

McConkey, 41, worked as a radiology/imaging support nurse before joining the staff at Metro Atlanta Recovery Residences, a 90-day residential treatment program for women.

She says she was ready for a job with daytime hours and more long-term contact with patients, but her dedication goes beyond the call of duty.

"She truly cares about her patients without being judgmental," Shoran said. "I've seen her jump through hoops to obtain prescription assistance for those who cannot afford their medicines. She teaches them about making the right choices and accepting responsibility for their own lives.

"She's right there with them every step of the way. She's tough with the ladies, and they love her."

Shoran said that McConkey maintains contact with her patients long after they're discharged.

"When a resident required chemotherapy to treat cancer, Celeste cared enough to help keep her spirits up during the treatment," Shoran said. "There are a lot of ups and downs in this type of work, but Celeste is always right there to be supportive and encouraging. She's like their guardian angel."
