Retired nurse gives back as a volunteer

Who says you can't go home again? Retired nurse Lillian Bundridge of Mableton has returned to her former place of employment - but as a volunteer. After more than 30 years at Piedmont Hospital, Bundridge, 62, is well-qualified to help direct lost visitors as a greeter.

She retired in 1997 and spent a few years working part time at a respite center before facing a serious illness herself in 2001. She began volunteering four hours a week at Piedmont in March.

Volunteering at the very place where she enjoyed a satisfying career has added meaning to her service, Bundridge said.

"I wanted to give back, and I love people, of course, being a nurse, so it's really been a joy, a blessing," she said. "It just feels really good to be able to do something to help someone and give the glory to God, just to be able to offer myself to something and extend my spirit to them. And to know I'm helping someone else, because I've been helped along the way also."
