A 3-year-old boy was injured Thursday afternoon when his shoes were caught in an escalator at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.

The boy, whose name was not released, was riding a Concourse C escalator with parents around 1 p.m., when his shoes were caught, trapping and seriously injuring his foot, airport officials said.

He was treated at the scene and then taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, airport spokesman Hershel Grangent said.

"Our escalators are safe," Grangent said.

He said airport staff immediately began putting up signs warning of the dangers of wearing soft shoes on escalators, and that parents should be especially careful if their children are wearing soft shoes.

"We're trying to remind parents to be more attentive with their kids and watch them when they're in the airport," Grangent said.

Earlier this week, a child was injured when his foot got caught in an escalator at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, officials said.

The boy and his family had just cleared the main security checkpoint and were headed down the escalator to the automated people-mover Tuesday morning when the boy was hurt. The boy was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with a possible broken left foot.

On July 1, a Kentucky mother sued the manufacturer of the popular Crocs shoes for $4 million, blaming the company for injuries her 3-year-old daughter suffered when the girl's foot was trapped in a Hartsfield escalator.

The Colorado-based Crocs released a statement July 22 announcing an escalator safety initiative.

Over the next year, Crocs — the polyurethane clog-type shoes — will be packaged and sold with educational hang tags, the statement said. Among other tips, it said, "New language added to the hang tags reminds consumers to use care when riding escalators and moving walkways."
