Concentrated poverty rises in part of Georgia

Published on: 08/13/08

A study shows pockets of concentrated poverty in some of the nation's largest metropolitan areas — including parts of Georgia — deepened between 1999 and 2005.

A new study by the Washington-based Brookings Institution looks at 58 metropolitan areas, including Augusta-Richmond County.

It analyzes concentrated poverty by examining the numbers of tax filers in each zip code receiving the federal earned income tax credit for low-income workers.

The study says that in 2005, 12.3 percent of low-income working families lived in concentrated working poverty communities, defined as zip codes where more than 40 percent of taxpayers claimed the credit.

The study says 16,377 tax credit filers in the Augusta-Richmond County region were concentrated in a few zip codes in 2005. That's up 14.8 percent from 1999.
