Bingo, the oldest male eastern bongo antelope in North America, was euthanized Sunday at Zoo Atlanta, zoo officials said Wednesday.
According to zoo spokeswoman Simone Griffin, Bingo, at 17, was the fourth-oldest bongo in captivity worldwide.
Bingo was born May 5, 1992, at Miami Metrozoo, and had lived at Zoo Atlanta since 2002.
The decision to euthanize Bingo was made after his health began to decline suddenly on Saturday, Griffin said.
A necropsy will be performed at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Zoo Atlanta’s female eastern bongo, 19-year-old Mzima, is the oldest bongo living in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums institution and is the second-oldest of her species in captivity in the world, Griffin said.
