Newlyweds ready for the next step

For the AJC

Our house hunters

P.J. and Micah Hamm moved to Atlanta four years ago and have been loving their life in a Virginia Highland condo. After they tied the knot 10 months ago, house-hunting was next on their list. The young couple, both in sales, loved living close to the city, its entertainment, sports, restaurants and clubs. Their hunt began inside the Perimeter in neighborhoods with good schools and houses with large backyards — for the dog they hope to get soon, and for the children they hope to have later.

Special

P.J. and Micah Hamm

The process

One weekend, they ran across an open house that had just closed, but the agent – Jayson Janowski of the Chuck and Marshall Group, Re/Max Metro Atlanta – was happy to let them in. “He spent the next hour talking with us,” P.J. says. They knew immediately that they’d found their Realtors. While Realtor Joan Kaplan showed P.J. and Micah the houses, everyone in the company was involved in the process.

House #1

Listed at $449,900, this four-bedroom, three-bath Cape Cod was located in the Clairmont Heights neighborhood near Emory University. Micah and P.J. loved that it needed no renovation, and had a huge basement with an in-law suite. Built in 1984, the house also included a spacious attic that could be another bedroom and an office. The large back deck and a pool made it ideal for entertaining.

House #2

This charming three-bedroom, three-bath Cape Cod was built in 1940 and located in the popular Winnona Park neighborhood of Decatur. A pre-foreclosure, it was listed at $430,000. P.J. and Micah loved the remodeled kitchen and the hardwood floors, the upstairs in-law suite and the garage. It also reminded Micah of the Ohio neighborhood where she grew up.

House #3

Built in 1950, this brick ranch in Druid Hills had four bedrooms, 2½ baths and a yard the size of a football field – literally. Listed at $439,900, it had a detached garage, a cook’s kitchen, and a large master suite with a perfectly appointed master bath. Micah and P.J. loved the fact that it had been completely renovated without losing the older character of the house.

Their choice

Which house did they choose? House No. 3. “We fell in love with it,” P.J. says. Once the couple had made their choice, the Chuck and Marshall Group went into high gear: they put in an offer the next morning and closing was just two weeks later. Micah couldn’t wait to start cooking in that kitchen and P.J. was eager to turn the garage into his workshop for the various projects he’s already planning. And with a backyard that size, can a puppy be far behind?
