APARTMENT OF THE WEEK
Landmark high-rise has history, great neighborsFor the Journal-Constitution

Six years ago, Sandy Guerrier moved to Atlanta from New Jersey. Moving in with a cousin, she wasn't enjoying life in the area and was thinking about moving back home when she saw a story about the Darlington in an apartment magazine. "I love high-rises and was used to something like that back in New Jersey. I saw the building, put in my application and moved in. It's in a great location, and the people here are great," she says.
Her apartment: The Darlington has studio and one-bedroom apartments for rent. Guerrier has a one-bedroom, one-bath unit. "There's a combination living room/dining room, walk-in closets and regular closets, too. The kitchen is small, but we're in an urban environment and most people go out to eat."

Her business and the neighborhood: "I do taxes, and my business, $29.99 and Up Rapid Income Tax Services, is downstairs in this building. I opened it 5 1/2 years ago. There are so many wonderful people in this building that have been my clients for many years. Even the ones who move out continue to come back and have me do their taxes." The building is home to a small grocery store, dry cleaners and other businesses to serve the needs of the residents and their neighbors. Within walking distance are the shops and restaurants around Piedmont Hospital.
Her neighbors: "There are some people who have been here for more than 50 years. That's part of what makes it feel like home. And there's also the property management people. They address your issues and they're prompt when it comes to maintenance. That also makes it feel like home here."
It's a tourist attraction: "The Darlington is definitely a tourist attraction. People know where we are."
