PRIVATE QUARTERS / A look at Atlanta's properties and personalities Singer's Mableton home never strays far from musicOne Twelve member Q. Parker and wife keep steady beat of visitors The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 11/18/07 There's only pleasure and no pain at Quinnes and Sharlinda Parker's Mableton home.
Quinnes "Q" Parker is a member of the R&B group One Twelve, and he's also known as a songwriter and solo performer. Parker's profession is hard to miss in his south Cobb County home where he has a recording studio, piano room and DJ booth in the backyard. One Twelve released their latest album, "Pleasure & Pain," in 2005. Lately, Q. Parker has been working on a solo album and continues to write for a who's-who roster of artists. Parker, his wife, and their 3-year-old son, Quinnes Parker Jr., moved into their 5,500-square-foot, traditional-style home five years ago. The Parker home tour starts in the stairwell to the basement, where Q. Parker has many framed, autographed athletic jerseys. Some are from friends and some are from clients of his wife's Buckhead nail salon, Tu La 2. (Sharlinda Parker says some of the toughest athletes and entertainers — L.A. Reid, Usher, Jermaine Dupri — enjoy the occasional manicure. "Men fuss about their nails," she said.) Names on his basement wall of fame include basketball greats Michael Jordan and Dikembe Mutombo, football star Champ Bailey and Olympic runner Maurice Greene. (Q. Parker was a runner, too, though not of Olympic caliber. He ran track at Walter F. George High School, which is now South Atlanta High School.) The basement also contains a full bath with double showers and lockers for guests to use after playing ball on the backyard basketball court. The sink features show lights, evoking a movie star's dressing-room. Sharlinda Parker painted the room in a chocolate color that feels like a warm hug. Sharlinda has an interior decorating business and a concierge company in addition to the salon she owns with her sister, Sabrina Rowe. The pool room in the basement is bathed in Roll-Tide red and University of Alabama memorabilia. Q. Parker's parents hail from Birmingham and his stepdaughter, Kahdijiha Rowe, is a senior at the university. Q. Parker also built a small recording studio with a vocal booth. Soundproofing allows him to lay down tracks and find his inspiration in the comfort of his own home. The Atlanta R&B group's grammy for "I'll Be Missing You" is on display in the studio. Back upstairs in the piano room, Q. Parker can tickle the ivories on his grand piano while little Quinnes plays his own version nearby. Myriad record plaques hang on the nearby wall. Most of the artists have a connection to Parker either through performance, writing a song or both. The Parkers say their style is a mix. "We are two very versatile people, and our home and the way we furnish our home matches our personality," Quinnes Parker said. "I love fashion, and I love clothes. I look at furnishing a house similar to the way I dress." Like many homeowners, the Parkers consider their kitchen as central to the house. "My wife is an excellent cook. I have to go to the gym everyday!" Q. Parker said. The couple chose cherry wood cabinets, topped with dark granite counters that include hints of pink and purple. It was important to match the cabinets to the Brazilian cherry wood floors, which Q. Parker shines twice a week using a damp cloth and knee pads. "Before the music and all that, I did chores," he says, smiling. The family room is where the Parkers like to kick back and watch television. They bought the sectional and had it recovered in a velvety mocha brown. Sharlinda Parker favors reupholstering — especially with kids involved. The Parkers found many of their furnishings at Interior Design in Conyers. Island Flowers does all the floral arrangements. "I get them monthly and they'll last 10 days," Sharlinda Parker said. There are four bedrooms upstairs. Their son's room is filled with every kind of animated character, including a Thomas the Train bed. The daughter's room is done in cream and chocolate tones and features its own full bath. Sharlinda Parker chose to paint the ceiling in many rooms, "to close it in and give it warmth," she said. The master suite includes a lounge area to watch television with a king-size poster bed and marble-top, cream-colored dressers. The master bath is sponge painted mocha with pinks and golds. HOUSE HIGHLIGHTS • The Parker's south Cobb County home includes a recording studio, a piano room and a DJ booth/deck in the backyard. • The couple love to entertain. Their friends come over and hang out in the theater room, which is trimmed in rust and gold and boasts a 92-inch screen. Q. and his daughter went crazy decorating the ceiling with stars. • The Parkers entertaining streak continues outside. The backyard includes a swimming pool, a waterfall, hot tub and basketball court. The court is a made of a softer material that cushions no-so-young knees.
