Planning a low-key New Year’s Eve?

Ready to party like it’s 2009?

I don’t know about you, but I’m not hearing about a bunch of huge bashes planned for this New Year’s Eve.

Instead, I’m seeing lots of invitations with a more low-key feel. Whereas folks might have planned lavish buffets for their parties last year, it seems we’re hearing about “dessert” receptions, with a champagne toast, this year.

I’m also hearing about folks planning to meet up with friends at bars or restaurants, with everyone paying his or her own way.

There are plenty of events going on around town for those of you looking for a party this Wednesday night.

Budget-conscious party people may want to check out events surrounding the 20th annual Peach Drop. The entertainment lineup features Dancing With The Stars champion Julianne Hough and is free.

Is the economy affecting your New Year’s Eve party plans? Are you scaling back this year?

This is the first time since 1996 that I haven’t had big NYE plans. For many years, my friends and I would hit a different city for NYE…over that span, we did NYC, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, and New Orleans. This year my wife and I don’t have any plans yet. We may not even leave the house.

I prefer to stay home, and have friends over. My only rule, you have to stay the night. I cannot allow anyone to drink then get into their vehicle on “Amateur Night”. Especially if kids are coming to the party (with their parents). All keys go into a bowl, then I hide the bowl until the next day. I cannot have any accidents or deaths on my watch!!!

I have plenty of room for overnight guests, and in the morning we make a HUGE brunch with all the traditional southern New Years day food. Black eyed peas, collard greens (which I cannot stand, but will eat ONE), etc. Bloody Mary’s or Mimosas are served with brunch.

Alka Seltzer is in every bathroom…..

NYE is such an artificial holiday. It’s not the beginning of anything except a new calendar. Whoopee!!! Silly reason to celebrate….

Staying home and cooking up good eats like standing rib roast for NYE and all those NY Day favs of collards, black eyed peas/rice and pork tenderloin. Lots of champagne and bloody marys to watch all those football games. No guests, just the two of us. I hope we stay in our PJs all day on the 1st.

DH and I are planning on going to a church support group meeting which includes an inexpensive dinner ($5) with other fun-loving recovering friends. We will likely be home and in our jammies by 9:30. New Year’s is celebrated all over the world; good excuse to party and spend time with friends. New Year’s Day we’ll probably go for a walk and watch Lifetime movies or else go to a movie at el cheapo theater. I don’t know if we’ll be making the traditional Southern New Year foods, but why not - ya gotta’ eat!

I would rather stay home then have to listen the Julianne Hough attempt to sing. She is a terrible singer and a bad choice for the Peach Drop.
