Your Worst/Favorite Christmas CDs?

It’s starting sound a lot like Christmas.

I remember my grandmother started playing her Christmas albums about a month before the holiday. Our house would be filled with the wonderful sounds of Nat King Cole and Aretha Franklin.

My sister kept up the tradition and loves to play Christmas music. But I’m the problem holiday child. I only have a handful of holiday CDs. Well, one really - “Star Bright” by Vanessa Williams. I would love to have Alexander O’Neal’s “My Gift to You” but there’s only one listed on Amazon for $59.99, so it’s not likely to wind up in my sparse collection.

Do you play a lot of Christmas music during the holidays? If you do, what are your favs?

Not every Christmas album is silver and gold though. Lou Carlozo, McClatchy Newspapers put together a list of the worst Christmas albums? Agree or disagree?

Too many to count, because I love Christmas music, but anything from Mannheim Steamroller or Trans-Siberian Orchestra would be at the top of my favorites list.

Funny you should blog about this because Tom Joyner was talking about Christmas albums this morning. He started out by saying no one was allowed to put out another version of “This Christmas” but then he decided to call for a ban of all new Christmas music! LOL

I don’t really listen to CD’s unless I’m on a long car trip but I LOVE to hear Christmas music on the the radio. I can’t seem to get in the Christmas spirit until I hear “Silent Night” by The Temptations. I also love “Gee Wiz, It’s Christmas”, “Christmas in Hollis, Queens”, “What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas” (it’s playing right now on 104.1) and “Let It Snow” by Boyz II Men.

Also, I have to confess that I like “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer!” They’ve even turned it into a cartoon!

“Worst CD” would have to be anything containing Whitney Houston singing “Merry Little Christmas.” While all the Aretha Franklin-wannabe’s are annoying when they start ad-libbing ghastly arpeggios instead of singing the notes as intended, Whitney’s version is especially egregious — sounds like a yodeling yeti strangling a cat.

Amy Grant has some great Christmas tunes. Her new “Greatest Christmas hits” CD is full of the best and has some classics. She is to Christmas music in the last 10 years what Dean Martin or Nat King Cole was 40 years ago.

The Time Life Treasury of Christmas CD’s, Volumes 1 and 2, offer a wide variety of TRADITIONAL Christmas songs instead of the attempts by anyone and everyone to sing a Christmas song “their” way. Best money I ever spent!

David Foster’s Christmas Album from over 10 years ago for one reason — it has Michael Crawford singing O Holy Night. There is NO OTHER VERSION of the song that comes close to Michael’s version. It’s a song and religious experience all at once — and I don’t even celebrate Christmas. I wish the radio stations would start playing it again. It seems they only play the Josh Groban version now. It’s okay, but not like Michael’s version.

I love any Andy Williams Christmas CD’s, and of course Ol’ Blue Eyes-Frank Sinatra,Bing Crosby, Mannheim Steamroller, Barbra Streisand, The Carpenters, Burl Ives, A Charlie Brown Christmas to name a few…my sister used to start playing Christmas music in July as a child….such happy tunes evoked the times. Christmas is a special time and a joyous time to celebrate our Dear Lord and the blessings we still do have.

I hate Christmas music. I hate all Christmas music. I like Christmas, but hate Christmas music. I hate the fact that I can’t go into any retail establishment without being assaulted by it. I hate how the same songs are done over and over again by various artists trying to bring something new to the genre. I guess hating Christmas music comes from working retail in college, where I could not get away from it. I hate Christmas music.

My all-time favorite and one I grew up with is John Denver and the Muppets “A Christmas Together”.

I also like Alan Jackson’s “Let It Be Christmas”, Vanessa Williams’s “Star Bright”, the 1st disc of the NOW Christmas album (old Christmas classics), Steven Curtis Chapman’s “The Music of Christmas”, Third Day’s “Christmas Offerings”, and any of the Christmas albums by Jim Brickman or the Ray Conniff Singers (grew up with these).

Check out “Holiday” by Russ Freeman (leader of The Rippingtons). It’s some of the most diverse instrumentals you’ll find anywhere. Vince Gill’s double album is wonderful, and for great easy jazz arrangements you can’t beat the late pianist Oscar Peterson’s Christmas album

I like it, now that I figured out that I have been hearing it forever. I went as far today to downloading the Alvin in the Chickmunks - We wish you a Merry Christmas and laughed the whole way through it!!! The best Christmas music are, and always will be, the original songs from the late 40s and the 50s by the great artists like Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Martin,Williams ( Andy ), Brenda Lee, the Ronnettes; and, Streisand’s Christmas albums. The worst? Mannheim Steamroller! The most soulful Christmas music is by my all-time fave, Mahalia Jackson.

I can’t believe that you put Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas” on the list of worst Christmas CD’s. Have you even listened to it??? “O Holy Night” is AMAZING and what about the smash hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You”? You need to go back and listen again!

Anyone ever listened to Destiny’s Child’s Christmas CD? it’s obviously kinda old, but I love it. Michelle Williams’ ‘oh holy night’ is beautiful, and there’s a fun version of the 12 days of christmas too. Oh, and their ‘carol of the bells’ is cool. It’s great music to bake to. :D

Also, I love the Muppet Christmas cd. And ANYTHING that Harry Connick Jr. sings is awesome, especially his Christmas songs.

“When My Heart Finds Christmas” by Harry Connick Jr. and “Barenaked for the Holidays” by Barenaked Ladies top my list. “Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics” from the South Park people is a quite hilarious rendition when you’re tired of the same tame stuff, but honestly not what I’d play at a family gathering.

Thankfully, we can now cherry pick music online so we can get neat originals and not be stuck with extra renditions of the staple songs. I would like to ask all artists to please put more original songs on your holiday albums than covers of old tunes!

If you want instrumental background music while you wrap gifts, you can’t beat the Vince Guaraldi music mentioned by others as “The Charlie Brown Christmas album”. If you want soothing instrumental music while you enjoy a book, the fire, and a glass of whatever, the CD “December” by Wyndham Hill has some great seasonal music. I still love the old Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, and Andy Williams vocals. And if you REALLY want to go back to the 50’s/60’s era of holiday music, pull out the Ray Conniff Singers! I pretty much love it all… : )

“When My Hearts Finds Christmas” by Harry Connick Jr. and “Bluegrass and White Snow” by Patty Loveless (shout out to the transplanted Kentuckian making her an official Georgia Peach in my book!). Strange combination I know but both are classics in my book. I just bought Harry’s new Christmas CD on iTunes yesterday. Haven’t a had chance to listen yet but I can’t imagine it will be any better … “Ave Maria” gives this ole Baptist girl goosebumps every time and it’s impossible to stay still on “I Pray on Christmas” but “O Holy Night” is the best song hands down. (Can you tell I’ve had this CD for years!) Patty’s has my all time favorite Christmas song - “Beautiful Star of Bethleham” - its a country/bluegrass song and her version is the best I’ve ever heard. Her versions of traditional songs everyone knows like “Away in a Manger” are all fabulous. Great CDs that light my Christmas spirit fire every time.

The Worst Christmas album I’ve ever heard has to be the one Destiny’s Child released a few years back. God, it’s awful! It’s all about them singing scales and the worst of it are the songs penned by Beyonce (is that a name?) Knowles. Full of her patented singing nothing but scales and her attempt to fit as many words into a song whether they fit or not. The subject matter is your typical Hip-Hop songs about avarice & greed. Yeah, lots of Christmas spirit there!

It’s not officially Christmas until I hear the Kingston Trio’s album from the early ’60s. My parents played this all the time at Christmas and it’s just so soothing. The carols are not well known which makes it even better. How many times are artists going to record the same old songs? Dig deeper and find the lost chestnuts and try to bring them back to life.

Also, other great Christmas Albums of note are: Patty Loveless “Blue Grass, White Snow” (mentioned earlier by another poster), Emmylou Harris “Light of The Stable”, anything by Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald’s “Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas”, Mahalia Jackson, Martin Sexton’s “Camp Holiday” & Loreena McKinnett’s “To Drive The Cold Winter Away” & “A Winter Garden”.

Some of the worst Christmas songs ever recorded are: My Grown-up Christmas List…Seriously, can it get any cheesier & treacly than this? I want to vomit every time I hear it. Also, This Christmas. I know I’m stepping a lot of toes with this one. Donny Hathaway’s version is the only one I can listen to. It seems that this is the official “African-American” Christmas anthem. If you’re black it is a requirement that this song has to be on your album. Please, give it a rest! Great artists like Candi Staton & Anita Baker thankfully stay away from this.

Ten years ago, I went to see “Smooth Jazz Christmas Show” at the Roxy Theater in Buckhead. Saxman Dave Koz assembled guitarist Peter White, pianist David Benoit and the vastly underrated Brenda Russell on vocals. That show was so much fun that I saw it for the next four years when it was in town. The soundtrack to that show “Dave Koz and Friends Smooth Jazz Christmas” is my favorite as it brings back the memories of those shows. The disc contains standout covers of “Little Drummer Boy”, “Boogie Woogie Santa Claus”, “oh Tannenbaum” and original songs “December Makes Me Feel this Way(Kenny Loggins on vocals)” and “Underneath the Moonlit Sky”. I wish they would all reunite and tour again.

As someone who has collected the good, the bad and the ugly of holiday music for 20 years, I have some real gems. I would add to the worst list: *Cledus Navidad, Cledus T. Judd; Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics; A Wild-Eyed Christmas Night, 38 Special; and Tiny Tim’s Christmas Album. * Tiny Tim put out this CD in 1996, long after anyone under the age of 40 would have remembered him from the Johnny Carson show.
