Is it too early for the Christmas spirit?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Christmas music in October. Holiday decorations on display before Halloween? Retail ads touting the best Christmas deals?
Christmas is apparently arriving early this year. At a local Wal-Mart, just days before Halloween, employees put the finishing touches on the “Christmas Shop”.
We’ve become used to such displays before Thanksgiving, but Halloween? Go figure.
Have you seen super-early signs that Christmas is near? Can you get into the Christmas spirit this early?

This is true. now we will think and get into christmas first we will have halloween, bonfire night then it will take our minds of christmas then we have 2ndreremberance day on november 11th and 13th that will take our mind of christmas then 2 to 5 days later it would be time to get christmas started. Most people are getting ready for christmas all ready. I am 2% to 30% in August 29th to october 27th excited about christmas. Next year christmas stuff should start 2 to 5 days after the 2nd reremberance day.

We just leave the christmas decorations up all year long. Its to hard to keep putting lights on the house and taking them down. Now we just have to plug in whats hanging on the house already.

I live in Columbus and there are two retail strip centers that put up their outdoor Christmas decorations last week. I don’t mind the decorations inside the stores, but outside…give me a break. Maybe we should celebrate Christmas first then Halloween. So what happens to Thanksgiving?

Christmas is not arriving early this year, it’s been the norm for retailers to trot out the ghosts and the angels at the same time for several years now. This is not shocking or new. Retailers rely so much on Christmas sales to shore up bottom lines for the year, it’s simple economics at work. The longer the shopping season, the more hope exists that businesses can salvage the year. I’m with Kay…..I bemoan the virtually complete glossing over of Thanksgiving as a holiday in it’s own right.

Hello, Tamika…It is your comments that truly scare people when they consider voting for Obama…Greatest day in world history? Seriously? Are you that geocentric?

I can’t quite work out what “the Christmas spirit” is, exactly. It’s turned into one of those phrases people use without even knowing what they mean when they say it. Does it refer to joy, kindness, gratitude, generosity, etc? Why in the world would displaying those attributes be somehow more important, meaningful and appropriate during a month at the end of the year than the other 11 months?
“The Christmas spirit” means “In the mood to shop for gifts,” well, that seems kind of vacant and sad.
Anyway, Target seems to have divided their seasonal space at the back of the store to about two-thirds Halloween and one-third Christmas. I noticed that both of the shopping channels have had Christmas (or “holiday” as they would say) decorations on all their sets for at least a week already. It’s just silly. But, like someone else said, it’s hardly new any more.
It’s just so annoying. All those trees, candy canes, bows and Santas all over the place starting in mid-October make me sick of Christmas (as an occasion) long before the day itself even comes. I feel bad for thinking that way because the true meaning of the season is so important to those of us who are religious. I guess that’s where being in the world but not of it comes in, huh?

Tamika…you must be one of the ones that will benefit from Socialism, because that is what Barack Obama-Bin-Laden is touting. You obviously get welfare and food stamps and are drooling at the thought of getting more at the expense of those of us who WORK for a living. He has no business TRYING to run a country. He was never active in the Senate, chosing the majority of the time to vote only “present”. Look up the meaning of that. I’m sure you have no idea what that means.

PEOPLE PLEASE…just hit the “post” button ONCE. It takes awhile to take. When you keep hitting that button thinking there is something wrong, you end up like Lashaun, and blaming it on your computer. Sorry, it’s not the computer, it’s the computer operator!

Christmas decorations are out too early but that is what has happened in the last few years. However, when the election of Barak Obama is called the Greatest Day in history on a blog concerning Christmas the birth of the Christ Child which is truly the Greatest Day in history that tells me just how sad this country has become.

How did we go from christmas to politics. Many have shown their support for Obama and some have shown theirs for McCain. But what I do not understand is how voting for Obama will turn all books from the english language and the people wearing rags on their heads. This just shows the ignorance in this world. People please educate yourself before you open your mouths. Whether we have a black president or a female vice president, we are FAR FROM UNITED UNDER ONE NATION.

Yes we are pushing Christmas a little too early. I’m a retail store manager, and I know we are. Bsides, we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. It’s not about the gifts and decor, the parties, and who spends the most. It’s about the greatest birth of all. As long as the public (you guys) keep buying this stuff early, the earlier we (retailers)will put it out.

This just goes to show how people dont value he first amendment. Tomeka had every right to say what she said. You so called Christians(Im guessing when i say that cuz you are the main hypocrites that promotes love for one another but not of another race) get diarhea of the mouth and start spewing your ignorance in great fashion. Dont be such a die hard Republican to the point of being stupid. Mccain even knows he is an idiot and Palin constantly shows us how dumb she is, she constantly opens her mouth and removes all doubt. So, please people shut up and stop following suit…Common sense is free, but some of you all need to go out and purchase some ! by the way im an Independent.. i dont mind seeing the christmas trees in stores. If it would snow here like it does up north, I would be even more excited.

In part because of the “Christmas Creep”, last year our family decided for forgo presents and focus instead on celebrating together and enjoying a stress-free Christmas day. No more maxed-out credit cards, hurt feelings over gifts, fretting over what to buy or how to stay in a budget, or fighting crowds at the stores, not to mention saving tons of waste from packaging and wrapping paper. Stores can put out their Christmas stuff as early as they like, but ours is at least one family that’s not buying. Last year’s present-free Christmas was the best!
