What’s Christmas without….
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I used to love waking up in the morning to the smell of my mother’s holiday cookies baking in the oven.
Later in the day, my siblings and I would devour the chocolate chip and pecan cookies. They didn’t come from a secret recipe and sometimes the cookies were broken, but my mother only made them once a year and that made them special.
Are there things that make the holidays special for you?
Shopping for a tree? Making popcorn balls? Sipping eggnog around the fireplace?
See if you can finish this thought:
Christmas just isn’t Christmas without…

A Charlie Brown Christmas!!!! I can remember being maybe 10…sitting on our sofa..all the lights dim except for the brightly lit ‘silver’ Christmas Tree….it was beautiful….. my mother would wrap me up warmly in a blanket and tons of pillows….and I would watch A Charlie Brown Christmas and of course cry at the end when the little tree sagged. ::::::eyes tearing even now::::::
With my kids…. Antonio the “Magic Elf’ comes only in December….. he rolls the house thinking it’s snow. It’s all about making it magical for your kids…..

What’s Christmas without…..
My mother’s fruitcake. She sends one every year to me and each of my sisters. None of us like fruitcake. Years ago my younger sister told her not to bother, but you can’t tell my mother anything so each year we get our packages with the fruitcake. We take it into work and throw away the 90% that is left.

It would not be Christmas without eating mom’s delicious Christmas dinner with all the fixin’s, followed by her home made apple pie or hello dolly’s, and then.. the viewing of “It’s a Wonderful Life”, followed by the obligatory passing out on the couch.

Christmas just isn’t Christmas without… Being able to celebrate it without offending some foreginer who has more rights than a citizen, and we have to respect thier religion. Christ is the reason for the season, so why do you celebrate it without mentioning this???

…the Christmas Eve service at our small Presbyterian Church. The simple candle light service of lessons and carols in our pretty little sanctuary sets the tone for my holiday. It is like finding an oasis of peace in the middle of all the rush and ruckus.

Family and friends.
Christmas Eve Service at our church where I am the “baby handler” behind the scenes for the live baby in our Nativity Scene. I just love holding the baby, and trying to get them all happy before the head out to play the part of Baby Jesus, then going out to watch with everyone else.

Cookies, shopping, television shows, music, parades, parties, Santa Claus……
Are you guys a bunch of atheists? Do you even have a clue what Christmas is really about?
It’s the non-believers who are trying to make Christmas about shopping and television and visiting people - so that you don’t focus on The Reason for the Season - which is Jesus Christ. Family time is great, TV shows are fun - but remember to keep JESUS as the number one reason for Christmas.

Just remember - right-wing fundamentalists who presume to judge how other people observe Christmas and who suck ALL the joy and happiness out of the season make the baby Jesus cry.
Why don’t you people just shut the hell up and keep your VERY unwelcome opinions and bigotries to yourselves. It’s people like you that give Christianity a bad name.

Hopefully to the religious zealots they can still remember snuggly feelings including cookies and hugs from parents while honoring traditions.
We make sausage balls only at Christmas, bake for friends (you know, GIVING), lie on the couch watching Christmas shows (some about JESUS). Sing songs for a month (about JESUS).

Yes, I am an atheist.
For my Catholic parents and siblings Christmas is about Christ’s Mass, etc. For me it is about family and humanistic ideals, which match most religious ideals, of love and peace, etc.
So, sorry, Christmas isn’t a religious holiday for everyone. Perhaps that’s what is offensive. But it won’t change the way I feel about Christmas.

Exactly, Jen. Christmas can be observed as non-religious. So why are we letting nuts ban the word Christmas from stores and public? If you say “Merry Christmas”, it’s appropriate whether you’re speaking to a Jew, Christian, Muslim, or atheist because it IS the Christmas season and a US FEDERAL HOLIDAY. It’s bad enough that Sears has renamed their Christmas trees “Holiday Trees” and mall Santas have to hand out “Holiday Activity” books with no reference to Christmas inside. Don’t believe me? Go see Santa at Cumberland or Perimeter.

I don’t care either way about interchanging Holiday for Christmas. As someone else mentioned Holiday is derived from Holy Day. And this time of year there are many. So, it’s a general term.
What does offend me is someone making a stink about it in either direction.

it’s not Christmas without baking gingerbread men with my kids, decorating the tree and house with my kids, and buying things that I know will make my kids happy and give them joy once a year. Every Christmas I ask them “So, whose birthday is it?” They exclaim “Jesus!” I remind them every year that it’s not all about presents, food, and decorations. It’s about Jesus and if it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t have any Christmas. So, this Christian can actually enjoy the traditions while remembering Jesus, and being thankful for giving His life for us. Christians are allowed to have FUN too! Merry CHRISTmas everyone!

Athiests take advantage of a Christian based society and all Holiday Christians celebrate. True hypocrites, they want the benefits and then call us religous zealots. Be thankful you live in a Christian based society and have rights and can express your opinions, by the way, without religion you are just a monkey. So maybe bananas is Christmas is about to you.

You really sound pretty crazy.
I don’t think believers are zealots. The definition of a zealot is a fanatical partisan (of anything, not just religion). So, by being a believer you are not automatically a zealot.
However, this phrase by the way, without religion you are just a monkey. has some pretty strong zeal behind it, bub.
Not to mention it’s just a plain stupid thing to say about another human being.

You understand that no one is “banning” the word Christmas, right? If malls use “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas” it’s because the corporation that owns the mall or mall store has made a specific decision to use a non-sectarian phrase. There is no force of law involved, only the force of commerce.
And honestly, Christmas is a federal holiday on one day of the year - not the entire season. Do you go around saying “Happy President’s Day!” the first two weeks of February? No? Then your argument is…well…stupid.
But then, anyone who actually feels the need to scream “IT’S ABOUT JESUS YOU HEATHEN SCUM” in the faces of everyone who doesn’t say exactly right words probably isn’t that smart to begin with.

I hate to tell YOU, Rod, but you don’t have the right to tell anyone how they are required to celebrate a holiday. It’s your business how you celebrate Christmas. It’s mine how I celebrate it.

So, JJ…would you be upset if you heard “Happy Holidays”, even knowing that the person making that statement was genuinely being kind, and also realizing that there are other holidays celebrated during this festive season that don’t involve Christmas?
Are you so adamant that your religion and ONLY your religion be recognized that you can’t even accept kindness when kindness is offered without being ugly about it?
You are a very, very sad excuse for a Christian if you can’t.

CHRISTmas I believe that Christmas was stolen from the Pagans.
When all this crap about a man being cruicified and coming back to life was made up 400 years after it suppossedly happened, the Christians couldn’t stand that the Pagans celebrated the changing of the seasons, so they stole it and made it a religious holiday. They did the same thing with Halloween, but the Christians made that one out to be a bad celebration. It was originally the Pagans who were worshipping the changing of the summer season to the fall season…….
Same reason for celebrating in December, the changing from fall to winter………
So get off your high horse. If I want to celebrate Christmas, I’ll celebrate Christmas. I don’t believe in God or Jesus, and I’m certainly NOT celebrating a birthday for some mythical man in the sky on December 25.
