Ever skipped work to go holiday shopping?

During the holiday season while I’m at work, my mind often drifts into gift mode and I find myself wanting to browse amazon.com to cruise for presents.

I have to also admit that in the past I have been tempted (but never bold enough) to leave the office an hour early to hit the mall too.

Have you ever left work early, took an extended lunch break or called in sick just go holiday shopping?

With Christmas just two weeks away, is the pressure to find ideal gifts mounting?

No I don’t feel pressured to find the ideal gift. I feel Christmas should be about the birth of Jesus and not what your getting.

I am taking annual leave to go shopping. This is perfectly acceptable with my employer.

Guilty of doing shopping at lunch…but within the alloted time—no extensions. Then I am using a vacation day to shop before the kids are out of school. An employer cannot get upset with this…they allot vacation and I do not answer to the employer on HOW I spend the time….just have to have approval on WHEN I spend it.

Merry Christmas!

Yes, I leave work during the day to do shopping both during the holiday and non holiday season. Just earlier this week I left work for about 45 minutes to run to Walmart and pick up somethings that I needed for the house without the hassle of having the children with me.

Just give me a reason to blow this popsicle stand! lol I will take off early, take PTO days, or an extended lunch whenever I can. But nope, no pressure about finding the right gift for anyone………..any gift from me at this point would be a miracle. As for the employer, we are not taken very good care of, so my loyalty is to my family and myself (it would be this way even if we were), not to an employer who will spend generously on certain levels, but not for the “little people”. So I take mine where I can get it! I do my job very, very well, but that’s it for me. Corporate America sucks! AND, I’ll be off after my half day tomorrow until the day after Christmas, so I’m good!

Matter of fact, I’m about to head out to pick up a few groceries so that I won’t have to stop on the way home, since I was forced to change my schedule to be here until 5 every day unnecessarily! Peace!

Yes. I shop on line during work, shop during an extended lunch hour, and take one vacation or sick day off to complete my shopping.

Disgruntled - do we work for the same scrooge? If there was a contest for the worst boss - mine would win without a race. Why do i stay here after 12 years of this crap?

jmc, there’s way too many of them around!! Try to make the best of it like I do! Sometimes you have to create your own perks………wink, wink!!

I guess the good part is I’ve not had to listen to his “know it all attitude” this week. Instead of working - he’s been doing his shopping. Your right about the perks. He’s not going to give them out so we might as well take them :)

Yes, I do shopping and run errands on my work time. Yesterday , I left at 12 noon and returned at 2p to go shopping for the holiday and just for me. I go to walmart and even the supermarket. Just today, I went home, grabbed lunch and came back to work. My job is cool, but the director of my group is B*tch. I don’t feel bad about, I’m WAY underpaid, so I make it up in other ways.

One time, I left work early to Christmas shop at Lenox. As I was walking in, I looked across the parking lot and saw our HR Rep walking out of another entrance/exit. I laughed to myself and figured if I was doing wrong, so was she.

During this time of the year, if I tell my boss that I’m going to the mall at lunch, she knows that we’ll be gone (at times) for up to 2 hours..Never says a word, other than will you bring me back lunch? The owner of the company that I work for it Jewish & it hasn’t ever been a problem for him either..

Yes, I take long lunches so I can get my shopping done without the kids in tow.

Our company started Secret Santa this year, so I used my long lunch to shop for another employee, too.

I don’t feel so guilty about it…my company just announced they eliminated our holiday bonuses this year (for the first time).

A couple of years ago, the company I worked for switched from sick/vacation days to PAID TIME OFF. If you take a day off, whether you are sick or whatever it makes no real difference.

If you take paid time to shop you are stealing from your employer. The fact that you don’t like your employer is neither here or there. Stealing from a good guy or stealing from a bad one is still stealing.

During the Christmas season, actually. People only say “Holiday” season when they’re worried some hypersensitive whiner will get offended. When will we stop accomodating people who think that they have the right to not be offended?

If you skip work to shop, you might be an idiot.
