Who does old-fashioned caroling?

carolers.jpg

You’ve seen it over and over in movies and TV shows. The doorbell rings, the homeowner opens the door, and there stands a group of Christmas carolers, their voices raised in beautiful harmonies.

But does that even happen any more? A band of roving carolers seems more a relic of the past than a reality of the present. Or maybe it isn’t. We’d love to hear of your stories of being a caroler, past or present, or having an encounter with carolers come to your home.

And if you know of any caroling groups going out between now and Christmas, be they church groups, neighborhood groups or whatever, please contact Phil Kloer at pkloer@ajc.com, who’s trying to find such a group for a story.

crickets chirping. :)

Sorry, My brother and his church group did it last year. I just don’t think alot of people care about it anymore. I think if people want to hear it they go to church, or a christmas function, to hear it.

Yes, people still go out at night to sing christmas carols, especially to folks who are shut in at home due to age, illness, in nursing homes, etc. ** This afternoon I spoke with my sister who recently moved to the Tampa,Florida area, and she’s very excited about going Caroling with her new friends @ church on Friday night; she has not done anything like that since she was a child! I am glad to hear her news, because she’s one who needs to be reigned back into “the reason for the season” and to be reminded that “true Christmas feeling cannot be bought and wrapped”.. so I am very glad she will get the experience of the warm feeling one gets when they sing Christmas carols, and especially the notion of thinking of others who are not able to “get out” and enjoy the holidays. A personal experience with caroling: Way back many years ago at Christmas 1970 both my parents were in very poor health and had been pretty much “shut ins” for a while; my mother had been fighting breast cancer and my father suffered from emphysema. I was just a teenager at the time, on my way out for the evening, when out of the darkness suddenly came the heavenly sound of familiar Christmas carols. I’ll never forget how happy my parents were to see the smiling carolers and how much it meant to them that folks actually thought of them enough to come by for about 15 minutes to brighten their spirits. I wish I could find a group of carolers - in fact, you’ve given me an idea - maybe I should/could organize a group to go caroling in my area! Merry christmas to all and to all a happy, healthy, great new year in 2008!

Hell no. It’s bad enough that I have to listen to the holiday music in the stores. If some buttheads came to my door singing, I would have to release the hounds. Ban Christmas music!!! It is the most pathetic excuse for “music” I have ever heard.
